GX9 short term review for street photography
8

I've been using GX9 for a few times and summarised some thoughts regarding street photography, here's a post on my website:

https://www.haozhexu.me/article/2018/reviewgx9/

I also made a youtube video talking about it (with more photos in the end) (English and Chinese subtitle available):

I've used GX7, GX85 and GX8, the biggest impression regarding GX9 is the 20mp sensor along with removed AA filter, as well as reduced shutter shock produce the sharpest image I've seen (it may also due to my technique and skill):

Wild flower off the street kerb.

There's a raven on the tree. In China, raven is considered as "bad luck", because they often appear around cemetary, later I was told raven's breathing system is weak that they like places with fresh clean air.

The background is…busy?

The sky reminds me of "Olympus Blue"

Is this cherry blossom?

Thanks!

Nice review. I enjoyed your video.

I have GX 7. Other than more megapixels, new shutter, and new b&w mode, is there any good reason to upgrade from GX7?

A few things may be downgrades. For instance, the GX7 has a higher flash sync speed. It also has full bit depth with the e-shutter.

The IBIS is defo much better on the GX9. The GX7 has a crude type of IBIS which does not work in video and does not stabilize the viewing/framing. The GX9 also has more advanced 4k photo modes.

Thanks, I think it's usually right to say that "only upgrade if it has features that you need and your current camera doesn't offer". Compared to GX7, GX9 has better IBIS, as well as color rendering (IMO), some people also found GX7 has shutter shock. But as I mentioned, the ergonomic of GX7 feels (to me) better than GX9.

Very true on the opinion given by members before me.

I owned Gx7 and GX85. From the standpoint of GX85, just the 20Mp sensor, reuse of tilt-able evf of GX7 plus a small change on menu system etc doesn't be attractive enough to upgrade. Might a GX95 will?

But in case of GX7, I got more than rough reasons to upgrade to GX85, and so of course for GX9. IBIS and Dual IS, improved jpg engine and might be fine tuning of the sensor to have 1 stop better ISO performance, removal of AA filter produce quit obvious sharper image on side to side comparison between GX7 vs GX85, and less digital taste as well on SOOC jpg, new shutter, 4K video and 4K photo, 4 bracketing that focus is one I love a lot. Dial Operation Switch to make the dual wheels operation to control 7 features making it excellent on customization side, zebra for easier ETTR shooting, stabilized video... A lot GX85 offers to make it better on IQ (SOOC jpg), as well as on hardware side.

If I only have GX7, I shall upgrade to GX9 without 2nd thought.
