Help please: Images become puzzle pieces with my GX7

I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC GX7.  When I look at pictures on the touch screen/monitor the images look normal, but after I download them to my computer and view them, some are chopped up into pieces.  The chopped pieces vary in shape and size and are laid out like puzzle pieces that are in the wrong place. It's random.  Some are:

- discolored

- shifted out of position (a lower corner may be in the top center)

- "zoomed-in" sections- some just altered in a couple of ways, others a total mess.

Does anyone know what might be going here?  If so what can I do?  If not, any suggestions?  I have a trip coming up and would like to make sure this doesn't happen again.

This was a beautiful scene...

You bought your cam brand new or used? How old is your cam and when the problem 1st happened?

When you have a normal review in camera, the file should have been written and saved properly. Would it be a problem on your computer side and the image viewer you used?

Does your cam still under warranty?

The .jpg files got damaged. This may either have happened when they were saved in the camera or when they were transfered to the computer.  It doesn't mean much that they looked good on the camera because for that, cameras usually use smaller preview images that are embedded in the image files (but it may use the full image when you zoom in far enough).  I'd start by trying to take some images on a different memory card, preferably formatted in the camera, and by trying to read the original files on a different device that has a card slot, or using a different transfer method (e.g. wifi, cable).

Curious - this pic is nearly a year old - any problems since then?

EXIF shows that it was shot using Scene mode, is this something all the glitched ones have in common?

How are you getting the images to your comp - SD card, cable or Wifi?

If you still have the images on card do you get the same result using different transfer methods?

I would dump the card and reset the camera - make sure a cards are always formatted in camera - never in comp.

Also error check the memory card when plugged into your PC using chkdsk [SD card drive letter] /f

Thanks for your help.  I'll try all of your recommendations.  Will try to transfer by wifi.

Re: Help please: Images become puzzle pieces with my GX7

I bought it new in 2015, so no more warranty .  The problem started right away.  I formatted the card in the camera, then practiced  / learned the camera before going on a trip.  When I returned, I downloaded the card in my computer.  Saw the problem on quite a few shots.  Should have investigated the issue at the time but "life" happened and it wasn't a priority.

I reformatted the card in the camera.

Didn't do much photography until 2017, so any images in the meantime were only on the card (not viewed on computer).

This sample image from 2017 was from a "batch" of ~900 images download via card.  About 20 of the 900 have this problem.

Definitely could be computer +/- image viewer issue.

Thanks for your reply.

Re: Help please: Images become puzzle pieces with my GX7

I don't regularly transfer from camera to computer (BAD habit, I know) so need to do that today. I've only done it by SD card, so will try it by wifi. I still have those images on the card so it'll be a great test.

I'll need to look back re: any commonalities with scene mode or other factor.

Will definitely get a new card, format it in camera (as always), and reset.

Thanks for your help.

Looks like an incompatible card. Had something similar happen on a Nikon years ago.

Sorry that happened to you.  A new card will hopefully be the easy fix.  Thanks.

I had a similar problem with my Olympus PM2. I tried exporting the un edited picture to the desktop and that copy was fine. I was using iPhoto at the time. That problem hasn't happened since using Photos that came with the MacOS upgrade.

Export the image to your desktop, then open. See if the problem persist in that file. That’s what I did when I had a picture in a picture. A software update fixed the problem.  YMMV
