Is it true that it will be only compatible with the new P1000? If yes, I'm afraid this would be wrong move from Nikon. As owners of Nikon Dslrs will still be buying Oly EE-1or some other RDS.

Fine then for Nikon DSLR owners. Though it's more expensive than Oly's EE-1 costing 91-125 EUR (106-144 USD) in Germany.

BIFs May be Possible

Will 1st try larger EVF B4 considering this.  I bet it’ll sell out quick.  Smart folks over at Neekon right now.  Giving Sony a run for their money.

Re: Nikon dot sight DF-M1 announced (for P1000)

I need to research how this would be used? Is it for very distant targets so instead of using the viewfinder you just point with the dot?

The main reason why I haven't pre-ordered the P1000 is because I want to see its size and weight in real life, currently I would be slow to get any accessory that adds to it, other than a macro or close up lens (what I am researching and may open a separate thread for)

Re: Nikon dot sight DF-M1 announced (for P1000)

The only good reason I known to use it is to follow BIF perhaps other wildlife moving.

I own the Olympus EE-1 and intended to use it on the P1000

My question will be if there will be some reason to switch to the Nikon Red sight ?

Probably no answer until somebody can do the comparison

I’m a great one for gadgets but even I am not sure how I would use it, unless it’s for tracking a lion across Kenya!!

Nikon's RDS enables changing the dot color (red/green) and its form/shape (3 options: point, circle and circle with point inside). It has also bigger knobs for horizontal&vertical dot settings. Instead of having a "click-type" round button for the dot light intensity as is the case with Oly's RDS it employs 2 press type buttons.

Looks like an uprated Olympus EE-1 RDS with mods and a higher price.

Thanks for the precisions let's decide if it worth the 200 dollars to upgrade?

This was one of the things I was asking for. In addition to the focus ring and several other points. I will be buying several of these. If review is good, all my friends will receive one. Every birder could have one of these! (birding is one of the most participated activity.)

Call it a very wide rangefinder with a focus area dot. Makes keeping small items in the FOV easier. Imagine warblers and their well-known cloaking devices, shy Kingfishers, or even airshow jets at close-range, reading the watch on the pilot.

Now if focus could get faster and get rid of diffraction issues... Or use pre-focus on a spot..  Really hoping this works as expected.

If the new 500 pf focus and IQ are as we expect, winners all around.

Then why would they announce it the same day "alongside" the 500/5.6E ED PF VR, if it was only for the P1000?   (I have an idea the product web page, which is barely two days old, will be updated as it nears release).

I shoot anywhere between 400-800mm so anything that can assist these old eyes in tracking moving objects like flying birds is worth its weight in gold.

Agree!  Swallows at 1200. This should help tremendously.  Hoping it has a wide fov.

Not that it's needed, but I wonder if this unit has parallax correction?

My understanding is that the sight has to be adjusted for distance.  I could be wrong.
