Re: Canon t5 to SL2?

Here is a series that shows a frequent issue i run into.

Ideally i wanted the area above the waterfall bright enough to see

So the easiest way is to lower f stop....which does fix it but sort of ruins the photo. I have since picked up a macro twin flash to fix the lens shading problem

Re: Canon t5 to SL2?

You have to meter to the highlights or mid tone in the scene.

It looks like you have set up spot metering?

Try using evaluative.

Cheers

Im curious how exactly I’d photostack with a canon t5?

It could be useful to combine photos in general.

If you google "focus stacking," there's tons of info out there on techniques and software.

For macro, what I usually do is lock focus and shoot bursts while I gently sway away from the subject.  This gives you nice slices of the subject.

You can then either combine them using software, or you can just select an individual frame to use (that has the best focal point).

At the most basic level, you can simply use the (Photoshop, or other) Clone Stamp tool to copy over something like a critter's eye, like I did with this image...

Cloned only the (in-focus) eye from one frame into the other.

Sometimes this is all you need.

The more you want to alter a scene, the more you have to hone your technique.

Note: Your request is actually a perfect example where improved dynamic range might help you out!

If you can't lighten the area enough in Post (without destroying the IQ), then what I would do is shoot 2 different exposures and then combine using software.

And instead of changing the Aperture (which affects both the flash power and the background exposure), I would instead adjust the Shutter Speed  (affects just the background exposure) to get you the second image.

I do highly recommend shooting in full Manual mode (and I even shoot with full Manual flash power) for greatest control.

Re: Canon t5 to SL2?

Come on, he doesn't need more DR or software just needs to learn how to understand exposure and how to meter a scene properly!

The if he really likes landscapes might want to learn about filters etc.

Can't just point and shoot in high contrast landscapes and get it right SOOC doesn;t matter how much $$$$ you throw at it lol.

That was the original request by the OP.

or software

Software is a great tool. It's half of the photographic process!

just needs to learn how to understand exposure and how to meter a scene properly!

As I read it, the intention was not to reproduce the scene as is, but to manipulate it to the artist's liking. Changing the exposure in one area relative to other areas.

The if he really likes landscapes might want to learn about filters etc.

That can work. Demonstrate to the OP how to use them in the scene pictured. He/she's looking for help.

Exactly my point above.

doesn;t matter how much $$$$ you throw at it lol.

More capable equipment can indeed help to get the shot. You're just throwing around aphorisms without actually being helpful.  I know you can do better than that.

OP needs to learn photography basics.  Simple.

I'm not going to spend my time posting examples etc as their are many free video tutorials online from FAR better landscape photographers than me

Re: Canon t5 to SL2?

Hello r2d2

All these have been shot in full manual...although now to think of it using aperture priority(so the camera sets an appropriate shutter speed) or even auto could help shooting with a full manual lens. I haven’t played much with those modes(except of course auto for off the hip shots with my other lenses)

The other poster mentioned metering. That i will need to read about. For this shot i was using a polarised filter. I did take a few shots at 1/15 with a decent forest bokeh I could combine in post. But when the potential for action exists that can be annoying(it looks like inadequate light and maybe too low of shutter speed blurred the damselfly in flight)

I figured out low shutter speed recently...with such a short lens, I’ve had success handholding shots regularly at 1/15 and lower if i can brace against something.

Re: Canon t5 to SL2?

I also realised i am not sure what changing the exposure inside the camera actually does in ful manual? It will tell me i am underexposed(because i will fire a flash). Is it not just ISO? Looks like i will go do some reading
