Should I change my new XT100 for the new XF10?

I have been using the XT100 for the past 2 months, and have taken some great photos with it. I've been travelling on Vancouver Island, visiting friends and family and going to some music festivals. The last month I've been on Hornby Island, a beautiful tho isolated place where my sister has a summer cottage. I've been taking photos of the wonderful scenery, superb sunsets and  wildlife such as eagles, herons, deer and the shoreline with tidal pools and sea anemones with their incredible colours which Fuji film simulations bring out like magic. I've been using mainly 2 cameras, the XT100 and the XT10 with several lenses- 35/1.4, 60 macro and kit lenses, 15-45 and 50-230.

As I've stated I've got some great shots with the XT100, tho I always seem to be coming back to the XT10 when I want to be sure of sharp focus, particularly in MF and low light. Tho of course, all Fuji cameras seem to have difficulty getting pin sharp focus with flying birds such as eagles and herons. Maybe it's just because I'm new to the camera, but I've had more difficulty in these areas with the XT100. Focus peaking seems particularly suspect in low light and the XT10 is much better IMHO. Also, the AF is often very slow on the XT100.

Sooooo- now that the XF10 is available, I have just ordered one and will trade my XT100 for the XF10. Am I crazy or what?? With the trade in, the XF10 will cost about $200 Cdn.  I also have the X70, which I love as my everyday walk around, and have been waiting for a replacement, a la the X80. I know the XF10 is certainly no replacement for the X70, but I've been looking for a Ricoh GR type camera from Fuji for some time, and the X70 wasn't quite it. And the Fuji X100 series is a little out of my price range. How long will it be before Fuji comes out with the X80??

The XF10 has some significant new features, very similar to the XT100 which makes it appealing to me. I still have the XT10 and XA1 so I will be able to use my other great fuji lenses.  The negative features of the XF10 don't worry me too much. I am used to the X70 with no EVF, tho the articulating screen is a big plus on the X70. Also, I don't use an external flash, so that is not a problem. I  rarely use video.

Any opinions on this decision? I am anxiously waiting for the XF10, and can see it as my new street camera tho probably will still use the X70 as well. So what can I lose if it will only cost $200 Cdn?

Well, if you don’t jell with a camera then of course you shouldn’t keep it. Personally, for me, I think going from the X-T100 to the XF10 is a downgrade and I would have upgraded to the X-E3 but if this makes you happy that’s all that counts and you have to live with your decision.

Sorry, this is a hard one to figure....

Your XF10 has:

no EVF

no tilt screen of any sort

no built-in flash

no interchangeable lenses.

It runs the same sensor and processor as the X-T100.....so it's hard to see that the performance will be any different.

All for an extra $200!

I have both the XT10 and XT100. I agree with your findings in that the latter is not as assured as the former for focussing. I nearly returned the XT100 until I paired it  with anything other than the kit lens it came with which was the cause of some of the softness and misfocussing.

As mentioned the move to the XF10 does not improve anything other than perhaps some simplified ergonomics. I keep my pancake 27mm on the XT100 and it is great for most everyday shooting. It is also better for macro work due to the higher resolution.

I still prefer the look of the XT10 files though.

Do you have the 27mm ?

Anyway my advice is to save your money and avoid moving to the XF10.

Good luck

Re: Should I change my new XT100 for the new XF10?

Thanks for your advice, guys, even tho mostly negative. Now you've put me between a rock and a hard place. '

However, my inclination is to give the XF10 a try, as I just handled it in store and it felt really good. I feel it is what I need as I'm looking to downsize and want to feel comfortable with a camera where I don't have to change lenses, but still has plenty of new up to date features, but won't break the bank. I have tried the XT100 with my fav lenses, the 35/1.4 and the 60, and it still didn't feel as comfortable as with the XT10, so will keep that as my primary camera. The negative aspects of the XF10 camera don't deter me in any way. I know that I should probably wait for the X80, but who knows when, if ever that will come out. Also, not sure why all the negativity re the XF10. And we all can't afford the XH1 or the XT3.

Sure, there are some negative points, but in my estimation a lot of positives as well, particularly for my type of photography and the stage I'm at. I've had my run for many years with high quality Nikons, and some very good Fujis, but now just want to slow down and feel relaxed with my photography. The XT100 just wasn't doing that for me, and the XT10 is. So why not jump into the unknown, have a little fun and try something new, and which won't cause the barn to burn down if it doesn't work out. Will keep you informed and post my results in DPR.

Re: Should I change my new XT100 for the new XF10?

I understand what you're saying and indeed I might take chance on an XF10, but looking at what you wrote....

"As I've stated I've got some great shots with the XT100, tho I always seem to be coming back to the XT10 when I want to be sure of sharp focus, particularly in MF and low light. ...if the XT100 is not doing the job for you, there's a good chance the XF10 will be no different. So it would be prudent to wait a while for some tests and opinions to appear. BUT maybe you'll be the first guy to tell us if it is different!

Do what you want to do.....

Do what you feel fits your needs.  Now with regards to your saying you are having a tough time getting sharp images with the X-T100, I don't know what to tell you because I find this camera even with the new kit 15-45 to be very sharp.  So I don't know what you are or are not doing.

Now if you're referring to BIF or moving object images, then that's another story.

With regards to the new XF10, mannn different strokes for different folks, I say.  You are confined to a fixed prime lens, it has no IS capabilties and has no EVF.  I personally won't go near that XF10, but thats just me.

Sounds like you're wanting us to help you make up your mind?

No, I've already made up my mind and made the switch this afternoon. Been having  great fun with the XF10, taking everything in sight, and think I'm going to enjoy it. It won't be significantly better than the XT100, but it is just what I've been looking for, at least for the time being, as the X80 will probably not be available for some time. I still will enjoy my X70,  but time to go into something new, but in the same space, so to speak. Unfortunately I can't afford the X100 series, so these lower priced fixed lens Fujis will be fine for what I want. And I still have the XT10 and XA1 with several prime lenses and zooms when I need them. I just want an everyday carry around camera and think this will do me nicely for my street photography.

The XT100 was great for still objects and I have some fine photos of eagles and herons when they are not moving. It's just frustrating when I see these beautiful creatures take flight and can't capture them in all their magnificence, so to speak. And I will still be able to take photos for objects that don't move with my XT10 and 50-230 lens, which is a great combo IMHO.

BIF from the XT100

Here are a few BIFs from the XT100 and XC50-230 lens that are not too bad. What do you think?

XF10 has a built-in flash but no hotshoe I believe.

The other ommissions are bit annoyance rather than deal breakers.

Not having interchangeable lens makes XF10 so compact.

XT100 requires a camera bag during holidays where as XF10 doesn't. For some, that is a BIG push for leaning towards XF10.
