If E-PL9 Had 5 AXIS Stabilization...

...would the camera stay the same size, or does 5 Axis stabilization require a larger body?

I do wish it had 5 axis, though, I'd buy at least one.

I suspect so, but have no real knowledge on that. I think it's possibly more of a feature restriction and marketing thing on the "lesser" bodies.

I suspect that it's more important to head for an electronic shutter ability.

I do wish it had 5 axis, though, I'd buy at least one.

No, Tom, the E-PL9 and the E-M10 Mk3 are the latest in the Olympus "beginner" stream of crippled cameras. The E-PL8 is the last of the genuine and familiar Oly Pens. Otherwise a bunch o' bucks and move to the Pen-F for that traditional Pen shape and 5 axis IBIS, and complete menu sets.

Anyone who has become used to Oly menus would find endless frustration with the E-PL9 and E-M10 Mk3 as they just are not the same as before. Too many menu items have disappeared or have been restricted to certain modes.

The 3 axis is still pretty good. I wrote and complained about the dumbed down features and I actually got a phone call. I expressed my displeasure with the neutering of the E-PL9 and EM10 MK III. The gentleman I spoke to said he would pass it along to corporate in Japan. He said he felt it was a marketing a decision. The more of us complain, who knows? Maybe a future firmware update. I can hope! The E-PL9 is a nice camera for the occasional use. Yes, I would love an EVF and the standard Oly menus but I like the size and built in flash for those times that I want a little bit of fill.

Except with the brand, can a GX85 meets with your requirement and more feature set?

The original E-M10 is 3-axis, the Ii and III are 5-axis and they are all more or less the same size.  The PL9 is essentially the same size minus the VF hump. So, no, size is not a problem.

It’s not quite as tall in the body as the current OM-D models or the Pen-F, though - all of which have 5-axis IBIS (although there was some misinformation in early hands-on launch reviews, the E-PL9 still has 3-axis IBIS, despite being internally similar to the E-M10 Mark III otherwise).  Though reviewers had often said the E-PL8 was equivalent to the E-M10 Mark II, it actually wasn’t, being a heavy external redesign of the original E-M10-based E-PL7, so the internals of that model remained, with only a couple of tiny firmware changes.

Thanks, Guy!  Though I have the E-M5II, and I really like that camera a lot, I still use my E-PL5 as the tiny kit camera to grab-on-the-go with the P12-32mm & O40-150 plastic wonder lens.

Yes, I have thought about pony-ing up the $$ for the PEN F, among the 5 axis choices in a range finder style cam.  The Pany GX85 is still in the offing, as well :), and at a decent discount, too!

Always great getting your input, Guy!

Hi Albert, yes, the GX85 is a contender for replacing my E-PL5.  I may just order one today!

Thanks for replying,

That fact that Olympus called you is really refreshing to hear, Bruce!  Did you send them an email, or their online, "Complaint Department", or a snail-mail letter?

Maybe they do need to hear from the rest of us.

Thanks for your input

I sent them an email, they responded, I followed up and then I got a phone call. The gentleman I spoke with was very nice and agreed that the simplification of the menus might have gone too far.
