your can be very proud of those photos.  It is usually a matter of diminishing returns when upgrading gear, no?

I had Nikon D750 & D7100 which I used with the Sigma 150-600C.  Although I didn't allow myself to 'grow' into airshow shoots, having only done once at Dubai (w/ D7100),     I was not blown away by my results.

I had somewhat better results at the Red Bull Air Races w/ D750 and tamron 70-300VC.  That lens even worked pretty well w/ an old sigma 1.4 TC.

So u never know... there are so many variables that affect outcome, and gear is not the biggest one!

I am surprised no one has looked at the new PL 50-200 with a 1.4 TC. I read a review side by side with the 100-400 and it looked pretty good. The 2.0 TC didn’t result in sharper images but that combo might be also not a bad alternative? I am on the fence at the moment to which combo I take to Kenya. Apart from the extra cost I am really torn overall.

Great pictures from the 100-400 I have seen online especially with the G9 which I have. The 50-200 would compliment the 12-60 and 8-18 nicely but I might need more reach on safari hence torn about it.

I already have a 35-100/2.8 so when I was looking for a long zoom for wildlife photography, the lens would only be for that purpose.  For general travel use, I'll keep using my 35-100 for its f/2.8 but more importantly, for its small size.  So for me, the 100-400 made more sense because I'd be using it at its long end a lot.

Re: Analysis and tips

Tanks for the detailed response Astrotriper. I t=think some of the editing is down to my personal preference, i quite like the over saturated colours or making the photo look dramatic. but i will admit my pp skills definitely have a long way to go! i have only recently able to get access to photoshop.

As to your thoughts on the camera equipment that is very enlightening. maybe i should consider something from the apsc line of cameras? but the whole reason i went mirrorless in the first place bis because are there very good video capability, 2x crop factor therefore meaning that i can get a 600mm f5.6 lens at £379.

Simple advice - f7.1 or f8 @ 300mm
1

When using 100-300mm at the long end, use f7.1 or f8 to get maximum sharpness and resolution.

Your shots are at f5.6 despite the fact that you had enough light to go f7.1 or f8 without getting motion blur.

So, next time try f7.1 or f8. Anything above f8 is overkill and counterproductive.

And yes, 100-400 is sharper a little. Not in a different league, however. Just a little sharper.

I like what you say rashid7! its no how big it is its how you use it....some might say!. its absolutely true what you say though, you may have a nikon d850 with a 300 f2.8 but you technique might be crap which ends up in you getting rubbish photos!!

Some more photos

Hello everyone, just processed as load more of my photos from the airshow. I think the display team photos look a lot better because i wasn't zoomed all the way into 300mm tips and tricks for pp would be helpful :). Pleas note that i haven't actually edited all of these photos, just converted them from raw to jpeg.
