Finally, 3rd party LP-E17 battery makers are...
4

...including the decoded chip in their offerings.  Up to this point all of the 3rd party makers didn't have the highly guarded decoded chip in the LP-E17 - thus when you placed these batteries into a Canon camera that takes that battery, you'd get a caution message from Canon.

Well no more.  One 3rd party battery maker at least - Power Extra (see link below) specifically addresses this fact - and they tout having the decoded chip.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/LP-E17-1350mAh-Battery-LCD-Charger-For-Canon-EOS-Rebel-T6i-T6s-T7i-750D-77D-M5/273290531489?hash=item3fa16292a1%3Am%3Am10STBKZa5flsSUlvHmgVFQ&var=572630520876&_sacat=625&_nkw=Canon+LP-E17+batteries&_from=R40&rt=nc

Now if you have some great reputation 3rd party LP-E17 battery makers out there who have decoded the chip - please share those links here.

The link you provided was for the LP-E12,,,
1

...which is radically different than the LP-E17.  The 12's did not have a decoded chip in the original OEM battery, thus 3rd party batteries didn't either - meaning, you could use them in the cameras that use the 12 with no issues at all.  But with the LP-E17, it had a special decoded chip that the cameras that use it look for.  If the battery didn't have this chip, you began getting warning messages before the camera even turned on properly.

I had these for a quite some time and never had an issue on my M5 or M6 (no caution message):

OAproda 2 Pack LP-E17

https://www.amazon.com/OAproda-Upgraded-Battery-Charger-Digital/dp/B07332DHBK/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1532312198&sr=8-5&keywords=canon+m5+batteries

The only issue is there is no battery indicator on the camera, which is what we all want!!

Hmnnnn...that's the decoded chip portion...
1

When the chip is decoded, then the battery indicator shows also.  If you don't have a battery with the chip decoded, no battery indicator will display - and every time you turn on your camera, you get that warning indicator.  Interesting that you only got half of that equation.  Usually, the battery brand will advertise if the chip is decoded.

That's the reason I bought these, they seemed to be the only ones on the market that did not give a caution message when turning on the camera (but also no battery indicator on screen).  Otherwise I would of just bought the OEM spare.  I do a lot of street photography and I turn my camera on and off quite often, seeing that message every time would of been annoying! lol

Yes, I just read where yours are "partially" decoded...
1

...meaning that you won't get the warning message, but on the other hand, you won't see the battery indicator.

correct, and I refuse to spend the $ on OEM batteries   The OAProda ones work just fine, just wish some manufacturer can make the perfect OEM clone.

Here's another brand that is totally decoded...
2

In addition to the brand I mentioned in my OP, I just found another totally decoded clone on Amazon:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07CYTTJNY/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3QDQQZGFBPIAD&psc=1

So are a few (and more coming eventually) that have totally decoded the batteries so they'll allow the battery indicator to show, along with squelching the Canon warning window that comes up every time you turn on your camera(s).

So far Powerex and Neewer have totally decoded their clones.

Just noticed that...

On Amazon - the Neewer clones show that.  Oh well - but I was intrigued by the guy (above) who has the Wasabi's who indicated that his LP-E17's show both the battery indicator and squelch the warning window.

How recent did you purchase the Wasabi's?
1

I'm curious because I have the ones that came out two+ years ago and they are not decoded.  Will have to contact Wasabi to find out.

The newer revised Wasabi version seems OK.

Great news.  Unfortunately it's taken so long to do this, I've already collected 5 genuine canon batteries over the last 3 generations of M3 and M5 ownership.  Plus a dummy battery to connect to USB bank for time lapse stuff.

I purchased my Wasabi's batteries in December 2017 from Amazon right after I purchased my 77d from the Canon refurbish store. I had good luck with that brand in the past for my t4i so I automatically looked for them when purchasing the 77d so  that I would have spare batteries right away.

Subject: Re: Question about "updates" to the Wasabi (for Canon) LP-E17 batteriesHi Ben,

How are ya? I have been told the battery is partially decoded, it still does not work fully on some cameras.

Kind regards,Terry

Safety First ...

I've seen WAY too many house fires caused by non OEM batteries.  A house burned to the ground about 8km away from where I live when a lady was charging a 3rd party Olympus camera battery.  Warranty is also voided with them.  Food for thought.
.
Additionally, Canon's Firmware updates for cameras have often locked out 3rd Party batteries in the past, rendering them inert or ...forcing you to accept an onscreen option every time you turn your camera on.

Whats more useful is the state of battery charge display which, unfortunately is still missing when using these so-called 'de-coded' batteries. To be fair to these third party manufacturers they do state clearly this short-coming. In fact, I received an accompanying note with the batteries I bought explaining that they are working on further decoding the chip to include the state of charge and will notify their customers when this is available.....I could do with a few more LP-E17.....just can't afford the Canon one's:-)
