How did SquareTrade reset Canon Rebel T6i shutter counter after shutter replacement?

I was playing with it this morning and it worked perfectly. The new shutter mechanism has a slightly brighter color than the one that had cracked, perhaps it's an updated part? My father never cleans his camera gear, so they are usually kind of nasty. The tech apparently also cleaned up the camera and it looked cleaner than when it was new.

Anyway, I started poking around and one thing that I noticed was the shutter counter had been reset. It is now at 27. When it was sent back, the counter was a little over 14,000. Is this something that camera repair companies(such as SquareTrade) is allowed to do?

If the camera has had a shutter replacement then the shutter count should reflect that.  You didn't expect the repaired camera to report the old shutter count did you ?

That sounds appropriate to me. When you get new tires, you don't count the miles that were on the old/previous ones.

I understand you (and agree), but the OP's question was how did the shutter count get reset. Canon has made difficult to even read the shutter count.

The OP also asked if resetting the shutter count was something  that square trade was allowed to do and I responded accordingly.
