Camera only shoots photo in Silent Mode

So I recently got a brand new G7 and for some reason, if my camera has silent mode turned off whenever I take a photo, the photo will just be black even if the camera is on automatic. However, when the silent mode is on it takes photos perfectly fine.

If someone could help me solve this issue I would very much appreciate it.

Sounds like your mechanical shutter is inoperative. Try watching its function with the lens off (there's a menu setting for that) at a slow speed to see that both curtains are working.

Maybe there's a wacky setting, I don't know that camera.

Good luck!

You can be too; ask about our 12-step program.

of the dark picture allowing us to have more info on your shooting parameters in used.

I suppose using the silence mode is just to use electronic shutter having all artificial shutter sound/beep be switched off only. Nothing more than mechanical shutter except the closing and opening of the shutter curtain physically.

There had been experience of a damaged m-shutter ( likely the problem of the shutter curtain, but usually we just can't control the shutter speed, i.e., speed of close and open of the curtain for the exposure) so might yield an overblown white wash image instead of a dark (underexposed) image. For that case the camera can shoot with e-shutter without problem.

When you unmount the lens you could look inside the camera body and should notice that unlike dslr, the shutter curtain of our sort of mirrorless camera is at "Open" position on default. When a shot be taken, the shutter curtain will first close and then open to complete the exposure procedure. If you have no e-shutter problem (curtain stay open all the way), likely your possible problem will be limited to after closing of the curtain, it cannot open again (but how can it reopen later after the shot and shoot in e-shutter?).

We need a lot more from you before any meaningful advice can give. However you can unmount the lens, look inside to watch what happen on your usual shooting. It won't harm the camera without a lens on.
