G6 + Dental Kit / Questions

Yesterday I purchased (for $8) a G6 with a PhotoMed PTS Macro CU lens and flash diffuser for dental use. There looks to be a Canon LA-DC58D adapter for the macro lens. I am aware that the original lens ring has to be removed for the adapter to fit but I don't think it is included in the purchase. So....

1. Will the camera work normally leaving the adapter on or will I get vignetting at the lens' wide angle (which isn't very wide), or any other difficulty?

2. If I remove the adapter will the camera be susceptible to dust if used normally? Finding a replacement ring looks like it might be difficult.

3. There doesn't seem to be a lens cap included. Couldn't I use a 58mm cap on the adapter?

With this purchase I'm hoping I will have a nice macro rig to use. Sorry these shots are small, that's what I was sent. I have an A720 that I dearly love and have wanted a "G" series model for a while. Photos (here and Flickr) I have seen have been impressive!

Re: G6 + Dental Kit / Questions

Using a flash of any sort will make capturing photos of teeth very challenging.

Even in ambient light, highlights in teeth are very difficult to expose properly. An intra-oral cam at least allows you to move the constant light source around in the mouth so as to capture a good lighting angle, but a flash pulse originating from outside the patient's mouth won't be nearly as controllable, exposure-wise.

Thanks for your reply. However, I'm wanting to use this for doing macros of flowers and bugs and such. I probably won't be using the diffusser that much unless I take it on the trail where things can get dark.

I bet that diffuser would do a really good job with flower petals, for sure. I love how the translucent tissues of petals can just glow like a lantern when lit with a flash.

Yes, I agree! That's what I hope to do with this, even though it was originally designed and used for dental photography. I love shooting macro and I'm also hoping the focus bracketing might help.

Very nice macro, beautiful color and detail. Great idea using the tree for the backdrop, it isolated the flower well. What is the equip' for your lighting?

By the way my G6 just arrived. No original lens ring, but it came with OEM charger not listed in the auction. I was thinking this camera was used in a static position since it had a singular purpose and that its condition should be good even though it is a 14 year old. To my surprise, it is in near mint condition! All for $7.99!

Re: G6 + Dental Kit / Questions

That the G6 cost less than $10.00, is pretty amazing.

The lighting kit is all Neewer parts from Amazon except for the flashgun, which is an Amazon Basics unit.

The lighting setup: the flashgun and 7-inch aluminum reflector with white fabric diffuser cloth mounted in a Bowens ring mount on a light-stand.  The flashgun was contolled by a radio trigger mounted in the G3X's hotshoe.

I took a couple test shots to decide my exposure values.
