EOS M5 Mode Dial Fell Off

Has anyone had this happen?  It appears to be just a little metal cap that apparently is affixed with three little dots of adhesive.

The camera is still under warrantee, but I will be making a trip in a couple weeks where I want to use the camera so there is not enough time to ship it to Virginia get it fixed and get it back.

It appears that I can just put the mode dial cap away and turn the plastic part underneath since the settings show up on the camera display anyway. I can send it in when I get back. It seems reasonable, anyone done this?

Great camera but I think they need to get some better glue

I had the same thing happen on my 7D II. I hope it does not happen on my M5. I think it's fairly common, but a pain. Yes they need more or better glue.

Happened to me as well. Shame because I was looking to sell the camera but buyers think the camera was abused

Can't even find a replacement to purchase separately anywhere...

Have you asked Canon if they will fix it for free? Even when a warrantee has expired, companies sometimes do that, for things that "shouldn't happen".

They fixed mine for free, even though it was a month out of warrantee when I finally sent it in.  I suspect you could glue it back on yourself if you were careful. I think that is how it is affixed normally.

Happened to me with an EOS 6D long out of warranty. I kept trying to glue it on, it kept falling off. Eventually, I ordered one from an approved repairer, and it's still going strong.

S2000 glue by the people that make Goop. I have attached things with it that you normally cant get glue to hold. Its just fine and the stuff is tough.

Try it.

I'm at least a year out of warranty I think... I'd have to get someone on the phone to ask if they could allow me just to purchase the mode dial, or if they could send it to me for free.

You might try a tiny drop of well mixed epoxy. Might never get it off again. (Tiny bit though). Good luck

Re: EOS M5 Mode Dial Fell Off

Somewhere during a recent trip, my M5 mode dial also fell off. By the time I noticed, it was long gone. The camera modes can still be selected but there is no visual feedback from the dial. Is this a normal repair issue? Any idea what it might cost to repair?

Considering the ergonomic flaw where I keep activating the Menu button with the base of my thumb when I hold the camera with my right hand, I wonder if it would be worthwhile to repair or consider another backup camera body.

My repair was free since the M5 was still under warrantee. It is worth noting that while they claim warrantee is 12 months, they told me that they will often give a couple more months of grace. I would call them and ask. M5's need to go to Virginia, though not Irvine.

They glue it on so it probably isn't too bad -- but then again, it's Canon so who knows.
