100-400 Mk2 Manual focus ring sticky when using override

Hi.. I am really enjoying my 100-400 mk2.  I've just noticed that when I have the switch on the lens set to AF and I use the manual focus ring override (with shutter half pressed) that the motion is "scratchy."  If I set the switch to MF then the manual focus operation is as smooth as butter.

Should I be worried?  I mostly shoot in AF but the Manual override has really come in handy a few times.

When I'm not playing birds, I'm shooting my accordion....or is it the other way around?

You should be using one shot AF mode and manually override the focus after AF lock (or failed to lock.)  Alternatively, separate AF from your shutter button with custom function setting, and AI Servo mode won't be fighting with you.  Don't ever use AI Focus mode, as it is a flawed design.

Thanks.. Okay.. I understand now that it's the servo fighting.. So much to remember and I"m getting older each day!! Dang!!  I mostly shoot in AI Servo.  I tried BBF and it confused me..  So much to learn. Thanks for your help
