I want to set a custom control button, say the Preview button, to toggle thru metering modes on the fly.
That is, toggle thru the matrix, center, spot.
The Preview button seems to only allow one of these.

Can you clarify that you want to press the button once and the camera advances to the next metering mode i.e. the control dial is not pressed

If that's the case I'm pretty sure it can't be done.

Out of interest what's wrong with the metering mode button + command dial?

Are you asking about just the metering modes (I don't think it can be done), or custom control buttons in general?

Some cameras, some lenses, some computers

Yes, I want it to advance to the next mode. This preferred setup is more ergonomic and ultimately means fewer missed shots. To use the mode button + command dial means I have to move my left hand from supporting my 70-200 or even the 400.

You can assign the PV and the Fn1 buttons to select one of the four metering modes. So if you are swapping between 3 of the modes ... say Matrix, Center Weighted and Spot ... you can do that quickly using those 2 buttons. Drawback is the button must be held during shooting.

Example: Set matrix as your main (most used) mode. Program PV for Center Weighted. Program Fn1 for Spot.

But I don't see a way to toggle through the modes other than the primary control.

I have sometimes used the Fn1 Button to quickly switch to spot. It's handy, but a for long term swap I would use the Primary control.

Hope this helps.

why would you have to move your left hand to use command dial, just use your thumb?

or is the command dial not the back or front dial?

Not sure what you want to achieve but I normally leave exposure set to matrix but have the focus point joystick custom set to switch to spot metering when pushed straight inward. You can also add centre weighted to another custom control button.
