Photos from the new XT100
8

How about starting a thread with photos from the new XT100! For me that's the best way to evaluate a camera. Proof is in the pudding, and all that! Too much talk gets boring.

I put my name at my local store, and was lucky it came in the next day. They called, so I grabbed it and headed out to some of the beautiful parks and scenic spots in Vancouver. Sat under a gorgeous weeping willow tree, put the camera together and started snapping away at the beach and mountains on a hot sunny day. Even some interesting shots from the heat over the water, creating a hazy surreal effect of the background, tho at first thought it was something wrong with the camera.

Lots of mistakes and took a while for this old geezer to get a feel for the camera. Missed some of the dials and things on my XT10, but gradually felt a bit more comfortable when I realized it was similar to my old XA1. Had problems with the film simulations dial and some pics turned out with muddy colours (which I attempted to fix by PPing them into B&W- ie, the carp at Nitobe Japanese Gardens). The new touch screen is a revelation, and much better than the original Fuji effort on my X70 (please Fuji, bring out the upgrade to the X70!!). For instance, interesting to be able to toggle from AF to MF on the touch screen. Will read the manual later at home, but wanted to get a sense for what the camera can do in the field.

Here are my first modest efforts. Let's see some more, and please comment, taking into account this is my first time with the camera (and without reading the manual!)

You have disappointed many Bayer Sensor aficionados with these low resolution shots! Is this sarcasm on your part for people who have held so much hope on Fuji's Bayer adventure?:-D

First off, I'd like to compliment your taste for composition; I think you've put together some nice shots regardless of the equipment used.

With the butt kissing out of the way, though, I do have a couple of questions:

1.  How much PP are we looking at here?  are these JPGs straight from the camera, or RAFs that've been played with a little?

2.  what lenses?  based on the EXIFs I'd guess the 50-230 (which is in my hiking bag, as opposed to the 100-400 [birding bag])

At any rate, top notch results for a so-called budget body.  Thanks for sharing.

If you shot these with RAW available, I believe it would be interesting to see what you can do with the highlights in the photo with the two sitting in the lawn chairs.

Nice stuff. I'd love to see the one with the totem pole and dense foliage in higher resolution. That's exactly the kind of scene that might bring out the watercolor/worms effect on the X-Trans sensors.

It’s a regular Bayer sensor so it shouldn’t be an issue.

Did you take that shot with the porta potty in frame on purpose?

Thanks for posting KK!

I know this is subjective, but how is the fun factor w/the Xt100 compared to your other cameras so far ?

I was sitting under a weeping willow tree in the park and in the distance saw a sailboat go by with the Vancouver skyline in the background. So took a snap and while the porta potty wasn't my first choice, I rather liked the unusual composition. Anyone can take a photo of a sailboat but a sailboat plus a porta potty is something special, don't you think!!

Jim

these were all JPEGs. Next shoot I will try JPEGs plus Raw  so I can do some PP. However, I don't have PS any more as I can't justify the cost on my retirement income. Only LR 4, so probably can't do much.

Sorry about the low resolution. I always post my photos at a low resolution so it will fit into DPR easily. I wasn't aware that I could post my photos at a higher resolution. Will try to send my next batch at a higher res.

Still too early to tell. I was a bit frustrated on that first shoot, but I can see the possibilities for the camera. Definitely looking forward to more shooting, if the good weather holds out here in Vancouver. Finally got around to reading the manual which helped solve a few of the frustrations. My second shoot the next day was better, tho still having problems with MF.

I must say that when I got my XT10 it was love at first sight and the fun factor was there from the start and has continued every since. Also the X70 has a fun factor that is still there after 2 years, tho pining for an upgrade.

Very nice. Unfortunately I  don't have Photoshop or anything similar, so will have to stick with my Porto potty!

How's this? The best I could do with Picasa.

Second Day with the XT100
1

Still shooting JPEGS. I'll try some Raws next time, for those who think I should. But the JPEGS came out pretty nice IMHO. Only very light PP in Picasa and some cropping. Taken with the XC50-230 zoom from the back of a friend's yacht at the RVYC (Royal Van Yacht Club) in Vancouver at Coal Harbour, Stanley Park.

Third Day with the XT100
2

Still having problems with the MF and the focus peaking. The colour highlites don't seem to work as well  as on my XT10, need to have higher contrast and good light for the peaking to work. Maybe it will get better with time, and maybe it was because I was shooting close ups of berries in a forest.

However, really enjoying this camera and starting to get that fun factor that my other Fuji cameras have. The AF is better than the XT10 IMO. Was able to get runners in the forest in focus, which is usually difficult. Enjoying the touch screen, tho still need more practice.
