Upgrade and/or trade-up?

Hello All

I have a Panny GX7 and 12-35 f2.8 Mark-1. Looking for a wider zoom and possible camera "upgrade".

I wonder if by trading my GX7 and 12-35mm for the new GX9 and Pan/Leica 8-18mm if I would be losing anything in terms of quality or handling with the camera? I have several prime lenses (15, 20, 25, 42.5) and the 35-100mm mark-1for the tele end of things.

Would trading in / up be a worthwhile "upgrade"?

Any opinions welcome,..

Cheers and happy shooting

If it was me I would keep your camera and buy the 8-18 lens.  The 12-35 F2.8 lens is way too good of a lens to trade it off with the camera.

Selling the 12-35mm doesn't make much sense, since it's such a good lens and you'd be losing 19-35mm of focal length.

Upgrading from the GX7 to GX9 (GX7 v3) does, since we're talking 2 generations, better sensor and image processing and much better IBIS.

Perhaps getting a GX9, then selling the 12-60mm kit lens and GX7, putting that money toward an 8-18mm might make sense. I think you'd get about $300 for the 12-60mm (t lists for $500).

The trade-off option would be selling the GX7 and 12-35mm. Get the GX9 and 12-60mm kit lens. Then buy an 8-18mm. You'd et a lot more range, but lose a constant f2.8 lens. Would that be worth it? Only you can answer that one.

These internal equipment debates drive me insane, so completely I understand how maddening it can be to make those decisions. First world problems, eh?

Re: Upgrade and/or trade-up?

Have you looked at what FLs you typically shoot at? If they are all down at the 12mm end, maybe it makes sense for your style of shooting. If not, I think you'd regret swapping to the 8-18mm.

Better camera? Kind of up to you. Others have pointed out the benefits of a newer body but your current camera is capable of taking great photographs. There are few cameras made in the last 10 years that can't. The only real variable is the nut behind the viewfinder.
