Samsung NX1000 not capturing more than 10,000 images

I'm using my Samsung NX1000 camera for a telecine project so it needs to take many photos but for some reason it's not honoring the DCF (Design rule for Camera File system) specifications.

In the manual it says it's supposed to do this:

But for me, each folder from 100PHOTO is getting only 999 images and then stops at folder 110PHOTO totalling 9,999 images altogether on the SD card. And I get an stop error:

Simply put, its doing this:

  • 100PHOTO - SAM_0001.jpg to SAM_0999.jpg
  • 101PHOTO - SAM_1001.jpg to SAM_1999.jpg
  • 102PHOTO - SAM_2001.jpg to SAM_2999.jpg
  • 103PHOTO - SAM_3001.jpg to SAM_3999.jpg

and so on, until ...

  • 110PHOTO - SAM_0001.jpg to SAM_0010.jpg (its reset and doesnt go past 10).

It should be saving 9,999 in 100PHOTO folder, then create a new folder called 101PHOTO and add next 9,999 image to it and so on until card is full. Each folder should have SAM_0000.jpg to SAM_9999.jpg.

It's very frustrating having to keep taking the sd card out to take images off when there's plenty of space on it. (A genuine 128GB formatted in camera).

Does anyone know if there's a setting I need to change? I've contacted Samsung support and got no help. Or is it a firmware issue that'll never get fixed.

Would using date formatted directory names help or do you take all the images on the same day?

I presume you have the latest firmware.

I will try as Otto said, change the picture names (only for folders) to use the date.

Also, does NX1000 accept "AdobeRGB" space instead of "sRGB" space, they do have different numbering conventions (and it is said to be easier to edit on computers).

Looking to your pictures, I see it does not respect its own "procedures".
Also it could be an error on the card related with the format.

Did you try to use other card, formated in other camera, or format the card with the "recommended" software (https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_4/index.html).

Theyre taken on the same day, sometimes left overnight so date would change midway through.

Can't hurt to try it.

Yes, I have latest firmware (v1.15).

Yes there's choice of sRGB or AdobeRGB. Its currently set on sRGB. Ill give AdobeRGB a go.

The card is a genuine shop bought one and has been checked with a diskchecker with no errors. But I can try one of my 16GB cards.

I formatted with the camera as recommended, but I can try that software you mentioned. What exactly would be done differently?

Theoretical there should NOT be differences, but they are different products, and could be different results. Since you do not know what is happening, just try different setups, maybe one is better than other.

Go to link and read their comments, is that the "standard" is a bit more complex than an simply system file, and could be differences. Or maybe your camera have a glitch, a grain of interfering dust ?

I formatted my cards with this software on PC, and also were not compared with other cases, I can shoot at max fps for about 5 seconds in RAW only (NX1, 15fps, about 25-30MB per RAW) before slowing down to 7-10 (?) fps, so I can say they are working very well.
Cards are 300MBps UHS-II, 64GB.

Re: Samsung NX1000 not capturing more than 10,000 images

By the way, Samsung "specify" that NX1 max card have to be 64GB, so I bought 64, then on DPR I saw comments for working with 128GB and more as 256GB and I said I am a sucker, but since I am content with the working, I will keep it as is.

I do not know exactly how it is working, but it is possible the operating system load in memory the FAT and since a bigger size will have a bigger FAT, could it be it an performance interference ?

Otto, please comment, you are on this (while I am more of an observer).
Thank you.

Yes I checked the camera can use 128gb SDXC. These are the compatible types:

  • SD card (up to 1–2 GB guaranteed)
  • SDHC card (up to 32 GB guaranteed)
  • SDXC card (up to 128 GB guaranteed)

It sounds to me like its not counting properly. Its balking at the overall file count.

Re: Samsung NX1000 not capturing more than 10,000 images

This is not a FAT limitation as even the FAT16 (super old) can have 65536 files. Sounds like a bug to me. AdobeRGB or Date directory naming might help, waiting to hear back from the OP.

Re: Samsung NX1000 not capturing more than 10,000 images

Apologies for super late response!!

I tried the following to no avail:

  • Changed filenaming to date type
  • Changed foldernaming to date
  • Alternate between the two, so date folders and normal filenames and vice versa
  • Changed to Adobe RGB

Would always stop at 9,999 images.

Guess Samsung couldn't be bothered to make the camera DCF compliant.
