Prime vs.zoom price

Why is prime lens more expensive than zoom?

In prime lenses there are less moving parts than in zoom.

Cheers

its not that cut and dried though . Take the 35mm f1.8, 50mm f1.8 and 85mm f2.8 . you can all three of those primes new for less than the price of zoom lens covering similar focal length and apertures.

You are probably looking at different tiers of Quality.  IE the 24-70mm Zoom is $2k new.

Which lenses are you talking about?

A good prime lens (most are fairly good) should cost more than a poor zoom lens (some are fairly poor). Conversely, a good zoom lens can easily cost more than a good prime lens.

There are also other variables involved.

In prime lenses there are less moving parts than in zoom.

Moving parts don't contribute much to cost. A 50/1.4 lens can be much more expensive than a 50/1.8 lens with a similar number of moving parts.

Not so!

The Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM II (zoom lens) is about $3000, but the Sony 85mm f/2.8 SAM is less than $300!

Re: Prime vs.zoom price

The question was wrong. I was talking about high quality zoom and prime. The price also depends on the size of the lens. (Thank you Martin).

Re: Prime vs.zoom price

Though it's not true for all the lenses(as there are cheap primes), I believe it's partially due to the components and materials used those expensive lenses which give them excellent image quality besides being sturdier and fast silent focusing, etc. The other bit which I believe is to push these lenses as pro grade by marking them up high which gives a way higher perception about them then what they actually do. Its more to do with psychologically tuning the brain to believe that these are the only lenses which can do miracles.

Are you talking of primes of the caliber of:

* Minolta 100/2 ?

* Minolta 35/2 ?

Those primes quite keep their value by time and for a very good reason

Re: Prime vs.zoom price

I think the OP means new lenses, not used ones. Otherwise he wouldn't have mentioned moving parts, and more complex manufacturing, none of which apply to used lenses.

There are many considerations beyond what has been made: Economy of scale for a particular product, what else is out there to compete with a particular model, pricing what the market will bear rather than how inexpensive a product can be sold for ...

There are millions of used lenses that involve 'more complex manufacturing' and 'moving parts'.

The OP has given us no information on what he's actually talking about, so he's basically wasting our time.

They aren't always. The opposite is often true. For example the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 ART lens is $1200 while the Sigma 50mm f1.4 ART is selling at $850. I can site many other similar examples. Maybe you should be more specific about which lenses you are comparing. My impression is that between lenses of equivalent quality and focal range the primes are usually cheaper.

In prime lenses there are less moving parts than in zoom.

You are probably thinking about the very fast primes which are optically better than primes. A good example is comparing a 150-600mm zoom which is f6.3 at 600mm vs a 600mm prime which is f4. That 600mm f4 has massive glass elements and is heavier than the 150-600.

Complicated isn’t the issue, glass is. Expensive primes have expensive glass. The fluorite lens elements in modern fast supertelephotos are made from crystals that can take up to a year to grow to the size of the front elements of a 300mm f2.8 or 500m f4 lens. A150-600mm zoom uses much cheaper lens elements and will have much larger production runs, allowing further economies of scale.

Re: Prime vs.zoom price

Thank you for your answers.

I didn't know that the 150-600 containes far cheaper pieces than the 300 and 500 lenses.
