If you would really like to experience Japan you should stay in a ryokan, which is a traditional Japanese hotel. Besides the tatami mats, hot baths, and sleeping on futons, one of the defining features are the kaiseki breakfast and dinner. The kaiseki dinner consists of about 12 courses made with fresh seasonal ingredients.

On our recent trip we stayed in a ryokan in Hakone and I tried to document the courses in pictures as they were set on the table. These are the jpegs straight from my GH4, I could have done a little better job framing and with depth of field on a few shots, but I was really happy with the color with just the overhead lighting in the room.

Japanese food really is the best in the world. And it is usually visually beautiful too.

If you are just aiming to document the food, I think your photos are fine. But if you are aiming for an artistic effect, in my experience food photos are best with some background for context. A wide angle, up close to the food, wide open will often get a nice image. Sorry I don't have any examples on me at the moment.

That great food deserves a more respectful thread title. (n/t)

Appreciate the feedback. In this case I was just trying to document the food. I do a lot of grilling and smoking at home and will try getting a little more creative next time!

Re: Tokyo Food Porn

A treat for the eye and for some reason, I'm suddenly hungry. Sigh...hours yet to my unambitious lunch.

Nice tip about the accommodations, sounds like a good way especially for a Westerner to immerse oneself.

Cheers,

Rick
