Re: Canon SL 2 ( Very clear focus view finder )

From what I have heard the quality of the picture between the Canon SL2 (200D) and Canon T7i (800D) will nearly be the same.

Here's what I wrote today to someone else:

https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/61194302

I hope that helps.

Small body =  uncomfortable my hand and feeling

T7i = very fit but unclear focus and view finder

that top .... really like T7i but focus really suck , SL 2 sharp clear view finder 20% more , and when u turn the lens it look awsome than T7i

If the SL2 is not comfortable in your hand, definitely do not get it.  It is not the camera for you.

The T7i will take the same quality of picture.  I don't know why the viewfinder is not clear.  Remember that those Best Buys demos get a lot of handling and abuse.  Could even just be a smudge on the viewfinder.

Re: Canon SL 2 ( Very clear focus view finder )

I have had the Canon T7i (800D) camera for a short time.  I use the autofocus and the viewfinder.  I haven't had any problems with it at all.  The pictures turn out sharp and crisp consistently.  I really like its performance.  My older cameras do well also, but the newer technology shows me improvements.  I was going to do some tests later between the Canon T2i (550D) and Canon T7i (800D) cameras that I'm using.

Yes, people can smudge the lenses or any optical glass with their fingers. Once I was having my eyes checked and the lens was smudged (at the place where we get our car driver's license). It's hard to evaluate things when the lenses are dirty (when many people have access to them).

Re: Canon SL 2 ( Very clear focus view finder )

The function of the viewfinder is to allow you to frame the photograph you intend to take while relaying some information to you like auto focus point(s) used, ISO, aperture, shutter settings etc.  It has noting to do with the actual taking of the image.  That is the responsibility of the image sensor.  The image quality between the 80D, 77D, T7i and SL2 is identical because they use the same image sensor.

I do agree with you in that the SL2 viewfinder is larger and brighter than the T7i and 77D.  This is mainly due to the different auto focus systems between them.

If the viewfinder is blurry, then the diopter simply needs adjustment.

If the focus is blurry after diopter adjustment then you need to adjust the AF settings.

Some more good points...you all are too smart. I forgot about the diopter. I need to review that on my new Canon T7i (800D) camera. It takes a while until I have gotten all my settings just the way I want. Last week I accidentally had it taking movies (the switch is designed differently). I had to get someone with a (gasp) Nikon DSLR camera show me the errs of my ways and help me fix it. It's just the learning curve with something new.

Diopter

As R2D2 mentioned, the diopter should have been adjusted to see clearly thru the viewfinder. Otherwise there should be no difference in the viewfinder of those cameras.  Also, what you see thru the viewfinder is not representative of what the result of the images will be.  You may see clearly thru the viewfinder but your picture could be blurred for a number of reasons. And if your viewfinder is blurry, your images may not be.

Re: Canon SL 2 ( Very clear focus view finder )

If the diopter adjustment is made and the viewfinder is not smudged, you may have to try a different camera.  There should be little difference.  It can be blurry in the viewfinder because of smudging or a poor diopter adjustment, but the image should be sharp when taken properly.  Check the reviews at Dpreview or Image Resources.  If the viewfinder was that bad, surely someone would have said something.  If you find a professional review that describes that as a bad design or performance, please share it with us.

Re: Canon SL 2 ( Very clear focus view finder )

The viewfinder in the SL2 is different than the T7i.  The SL2 gives a larger "view" and it is brighter than the T7i.  This is likely due to it having a different auto focus system than the T7i.  The T7i has more capable auto focus but the trade-off is it makes the viewfinder less bright since it has more auto focus points and has an overlay to the display that presents more information to the user than the SL2 does.  I too liked the bigger, brighter viewfinder display of the SL2 which is one reason I bought it over the T7i and 77D.  However, keep in mind that the T7i has a better auto focus system than the SL2.

That is an excellent package to start with and it might be all you ever need as these lenses are just flat out fantastic performers. I own them all and am very pleased with the photos they can produce. They offer a nice combination of image quality while being small and lightweight to carry around. As I get older, not having to carry a lot of heavy gear is something I desire more and more. You might consider adding the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 prime lens to this set. I will give you more low light shooting capability on the wider end and it is very economical to purchase.

Here are a few photos taken with the SL2 and some of the lenses you plan to buy.  Click on the "Original Size" link under each photo to see the full resolution and quality of each picture.
