That's it: my Em1.2 is gone before I destroy it.
13

So we have a great lightningshow here. I have this trigger that works alright. But my Em1.2 seems slow and does not catch a thing. It is not the trigger, the trigger is doing fine on aother cams. The I realise: first curtain shutter....Alright. Now where is the setting. I went for 10 minutes trough (I guess most) menu's but just cannot fine the damn thing. I was on the verge of breaking the swivlescreen off. I realised it has some value. And that is where it will go. I never got along with this cam due to the menusystem which clearly  is not for me. tried my GH4, found the setting in less than 20 seconds. I havenot used that cam since jan 2017. So it is clear which cams will fit me better even though I am taken back by the lack of service Panny gets people with at least some lenses.

I know this is not a perfect solution, but a search function could be useful. It takes 30 seconds to type the keyword on the freaking touch screen, but it can still be much faster than digging into the menus. The search could also be used to access a simplified version of camera manual + essential photography concepts. The next logical things would of course be speech recognition, loading the manual from the internet via WiFi, anti-virus/malware protection etc...

Why did you go into menus instead of accessing the shutter options directly?

Not so useful in a car...
1

When you shoot lighting you tend to shoot in your car. Certainly with fast moving storms you need to be snappy so I tend to jump into the car and deploy as fast as possible. I do not have anything with me most of the time. Not even a phone, I don't tend to carry these with me whenever I go on  either hiking through nature or these kind of trips.

Of course I was reacting out of extreme frustration because the lighting show was great and I missed on after another great bolt....And so my anger vented here was just that: anger out of sheer frustration. But  it seals the deal. I need to be able to find all the functions on my cam with ease. I am not saying any cam is better or worse here. I am saying that Oly menusystem for me just does not work at all. I just can't seem to find any logic in it...I am also irritated very much by the descriptions on screen with  every item you click on...How do I get rid of that...etcetcetc.....

Re: Not so useful in a car...

I was kind of joking with the internet access, but the search function could easily be implemented. Alternatively there could be an alphabetic list of settings and functions (with or without synonyms).

EFC-setting is kind of preparation phase setting, and therefore it should be easily accessible (Q.Menu or SCP): http://cameraergonomics.blogspot.fi/2012/03/setup-prepare-capture-and-review-phases.html

Because I know I set it once in the menu!
1

Because at first the lighting trigger triggered and triggered with  no lightning on it. So I was taken back since I know it works well. But for some reason just nothing. always too late. So I thought: may be the first curtain is sowehow activated....So where is it? Well: nowhere to be found for me. That is my main point: I should be  able to find it quickly in some logical manner. May be I am not so logical, may be Oly  is not so logical or both. Who knows....

You can always try of course ;-)

But I would find it more fun just to dismantle it in search of the elusive EFC shutter in there and then start another rant here that I could not find it

But you didn’t need to use the menus! Like almost all the frequently used options it’s on the SCP. And there’s a dedicated button for shutter settings too. You must have seen it: standard shutter, anti-shake, silent, 2s delay, 12s delay, multi-exposure, HDR ...

I agree the arrangement of the menu items is a muddle, but it seems to have become an article of faith that it’s a big problem. Actually you don’t need to touch the menus in most shooting situations.

The logic of Olympus goes through the SCP or the function controls.

Um, I know this is silly, but isn't the curtain sync to do with flash? That would be on page 58ff of the manual? Activated from the SCP, it says.

The problem is not the menu. The problem is that people do not even know what they are searching in the first place!

That is the difference between GUI and CLI. Graphical User Interface and Command Line Interface.

The CLI was first, far easier to use but far more difficult to learn because you needed to perform searches. The GUI was huge leap as you got to see all your options without searching. You just read and what you saw is what you got.

Now if someone wants to adjust the first curtain shutter, from where does he need to start? What is the shutter? Does it have something to do with the memory card? Does it have something to do with EVF colors? Or how about exposure?

This one reminds me from the one rant while ago somewhere I read how someone couldn't find for 20 minutes how to format the memory card in E-M1. Explained how did he go through all the menus and just couldn't find it.

What is again funny as it is first thing you see in Olympus menu when you press MENU....

People don't read, they don't comprehend what they read when the content is not exactly worded as what they expect to see or they don't know what they are really suppose to do.

Menu > Card Setup > Format

Menu > Card Setup > Erase All

Now someone would ask "what does Erase All be different from the Format?" And they don't know unless they read the manual. They don't think what the setting they want has to do itself.

Second shutter curtain is function with the flash to time the flash triggered just before stopping the exposure instead at the begin of the exposure.

So if person doesn't even know what is the function of the second curtain shutter, they can't find anything as they don't even know what they are suppose to search.

So to set it, Super Control Panel / Live Control > Flash > 2nd Curtain.

Once you know what you want, it is much easier to use when you have logical structure of the settings to give commands.

But if you don't know what you are even searching for, you are just blindly going around places trying to hit your head on it.

And just like in this time. The OP didn't even know to use a Live Composite for this or at least Live Time. No need for any fancy flash triggers.

It would be sometimes good to look around what you have.

When you press MENU to get the menu up, at the bottom of the screen there are your options. And bottom there is clearly at center visible [X] INFO each time the tool tip pop-up. Meaning once you press the INFO button, the tool tips are not shown on screen.

I think it is time for you to learn what different function actually are doing and what they belong to. As Olympus has grouped then very well, one of the, if not the best in the industry actually. Problem is that they are too well done, so some people get frustrated as they just want settings to be grouped without logic because they want just their few wanted to be on screen without any other settings.

Yes. I don't know what he is searching for but talks about 2nd curtain shutter that only defines when the Hotshoe / X-sync gets triggered for flash in exposure time.

But I think he means about long exposure for shutter release timer once triggered.

Likely he has a flash trigger that commands to end the exposure once the flash is triggered or something.

But he should really give a Live Composite change for that.

I saw that but here was my interpretation: "Push X to get rid of the INFO"! Since it is not touchscreen when it comes to menu's like these, it is futile to evn try to touch the X so I was amazed. In the dark I could actually not see the Info button. I am sure that if I did I would have understood...

No. After 1,5 yrs it is time to stop complaining (I was extremely frustrated when I opened this thread) and  sell it. Just not for me. Again: with Panasonic there is nothing to learn  for me. And I dislike Panasonic a lot for what they are doing with  out of warranty 100-400s but at least I understand their cams even after 1,5yrs of no use....They just make sense to me.

I did not get a book with my EM1.2.
1

That is the funniest thing. You get a new cam, it is 26 december and you like to try it. You think "I don't quite get this?" The you look for a book. And there is none. You need a PC or phone and download it...Great. With my GH4 I at least had a book.

Second point: OP never ever had to read a book for his GH4 in the first place bar one thing...Setting the frequency of the cam, which is needed and not clear. That is it. Setting customsettings etcetcetc...never needed a book.

With Oly I seem to need to understand that a heart means this and a diamondkind of icon means something else. With Oly I need to understand that under some circumstances the tocuhscreen just doesn't work while at some times you need to set it so you can then make it work. time and time again. And when you change a setting in SCP you need to restart the SCP if you wanted to change more than one setting. Etcetc.

So to some it seems logical and easy and for me not. Another one: my cam is now in 4K flat mode....I have no clue how to get it out of that mode. Just not even a hint by gping through the menu. The SCP is not the way, there is no other option there...Great!

I had similar problems sometimes, but with my Panasonic GX85. When I do timelapses, I don't really think about how to set up my OM-D's but when I tried with my GX85 I'd surf through the menus for ten-fifteen minutes before I just looked it up with a quick internet search.

Have you tried Live Composite for lightning?
