Question on E-M1 AF peformance

Hello,

I'm getting back into M43 and am looking for a sensible solution for my AF needs. I sold my E-P5 (bad idea) and am just now picking up glass again. I've read up on the AF for the E-M1 and users seem to equate it with the capabilities of the original Sony a6000. Can anyone confirm if it has a noticeable increase in hit rate over...say...the E-P5. if not I might just wait for the E-M1 II to come down in price a bit more.

Versus an E-P5 it's chalk and cheese, the E-M1 is much better, especially with Pro lenses. I've shot lots of sports and other action with it and while it takes time and experimentation to master, it's a very competent camera even if five years old.

Cheers,

Rick

It is little difficult to say if you get like a 90% focus rate with E-P5 for a cycling kids toward you, that how much better you want to get "much better"?

Like a scenario, you have a kids cycling toward you at 50 m range back and worth so you start at 50m range and stop at about 5m range as 40mm is too narrow at then.  If you get with E-P5 and its 5 FPS for C-AF about 30 frames from what 4 frames is slightly out of focus at closest range, then how much it really is better to have like only 2 frames out of focus or just 1 slightly out of focus?

But that is hardest test really for any C-AF system as the subject is coming directly toward and closure speed ratio increases quickly. The other challenge for C-AF prediction capabilities is target that speed varies so it accelerate, decelerate and can even stop.

Some E-M1 samples with Pro tele lenses.

My keeper rate has to have been below 30 percent. It was hot garbage to be honest. I've tried all manner of settings even in good lighting. I didn't know there was that much of a difference with the E-M1. Hmm, I may have to give it a whirl then. That was my only complaint with the E-P5.
