Re: Will you choose ( T7i ) or ( Canon SL 2 )

There is no comparison. If you want to do bird photography, for example, then you need a camera that will have a wider selection of AF points.  The t7i (800D) has 45 cross point AF, 27 of which are selectable even at F8 (if you use the 100-400 MK II plus the 1.4 extender).

This lens combination is not possible on the SL2.

It depends on what you want to use the camera for!

Good luck

As of right now I choose the 77D as its cheaper than the T7i

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1318281-REG/canon_eos_77d_dslr_camera.html

It has everything the T7i does but includes a few extra controls and LCD screen on top.

Here's what the dpreview review of the SL2 said:

First, let's take a look at how the SL2/200D compares to the step-up model, the Rebel T7i (EOS 800D). Here's what you get for another $200 (with kit lenses for both models):

• 45-point AF versus 9-pt AF
• 7500-segment RGB+IR metering versus 63-segment (from which we'd expect better subject tracking)
• 6 fps versus 5 fps bursts with S-AF
• 4.5 fps versus 3.5 fps bursts with C-AF
• Significantly larger buffer
• Color tracking for AF in Single AF as well as Continuous AF
• Semi-transparent LCD in viewfinder that can overlay grids, different AF points, an electronic level, and more
• Built-in flash can trigger wireless strobes

OK, you have now heard all the wonderful things about the ti7, but let me add this.  I just tried out both cameras at the store, with some idea of one for my mother.  I also own the SL1, so showing my bias.

The SL1/2 series is an entry level DSLR, nothing more.  But, it's claim to fame, and what it does incredibly well, is offer nice DSLR experiences at rock bottom WEIGHT.  I carry my SL1 on vacations for just that reason.  It is light and small, point and shoot size, with a great lens lineup (they are also light).  I found the ti7 to be almost the weight and size of my 6DMKII, and I don't always want to haul that one around.

So it really depends on what you are after, and what you need.  Both are excellent cameras, and both are quite capable.  Just depends on what you use your cameras for.

Good luck with your decision and your shooting - with whatever you choose!

I recently chose the Canon T7i (800D) camera but at Best Buy the Canon 77D is cheaper.  I may get a Canon 77D also.  I have two STM lenses now too.

IMO, there are basically two reasons to buy the T7i over the SL2.  First is if you need the 45 AF points for shooting moving targets.  Second is if you need the deeper shot buffer for shooting RAW files (JPG is unlimited with the SL2 like the T7i).  Otherwise, there isn't a whole lot of substantive difference between them but the price.

Re: Will you choose ( T7i ) or ( Canon SL 2 )

I own a T7i.

It is big but not heavy. Yes it has lots of focus points (irrelevant to average user), good touch screen, good battery life, usable phone/tablet app. Very ergonomic. Disappointed in Canon 24mp sensor (noise, color).

The SL2 is smaller and more than adequate for most users. Small size of the camera largely offset by largish kit zooms with VR in the lens. Same sensor issues as T7i.

So unless you are already invested in Canon lenses I would say NEITHER. Did I mention how disappointed I am in the Canon 24mp APS sensor?

I would look into Nikon for optical and EVF is your particular world of love or pain.

Between those two I would definitely go for the T7i. However, I would suggest ponying up the extra for the 80d so you can have AFMA. If it weren't for the lack of that feature I would be using a T7i right now.

The Canon SL2 should be a great camera.  I prefer something a little larger.  You might want to go to a store and see how they handle in your hands.  I suppose we really would not know, although, until we have taken pictures with them for some time.

Ditto. I bought the SL2 for travel, so I wanted the least amount of weight. I looked at the 77D (I would skip the T7i and go right to that model if I was going to upgrade), but I really wanted to go as small as possible.

The SL2 has been a very pleasant surprise. It handles well, takes great shots. The sensor is the same as the top of the line 80D, has great detail and contrast. It punches way above it's weight (and cost).

I have the 24 pancake, the 10-18, and the 55-250. When I want a bit shallower DOF for portraits  I use the FF 50mm. Other FF lenses work exceptionally well, especially the 16-35F4L- wow!

I only miss my 6D when the lights get low. I never miss the weight on my shoulder!

But yes, the number of focus points are a bit of a limitation- but no worse than my 6D.

Had I known what I know now when I bought my t7i I would have coughed up the extra moolah and gotten the 80D!

The t7i is great, but it doesn't have a lot of features that I'm finding out I need: silent shutter, metering button, AFMA, settings lock, autofocus setting for when in AI Servo!... etc.

Re: Will you choose ( T7i ) or ( Canon SL 2 )

I had an SL2 and then sold it for the T7i. The 45 focus points of the latter was the reason why. The size difference between the two is negligible.

I still say if you are deciding you should go for the 77D as its 100.00 cheaper and you get more right now.

When my 5D MKIII is too big I bring my SL 2   I’m very happy with the SL2 it’s size and weight with the pancake lenses is truly fun   The 10-18 and the 60mm macro are good matches as well

The 45 of the 7i are all cross point...only 1 for the SL2. That’s what made the difference for me in choosing the T7i. The size difference between the two is insignificant.

Depends. If you're not doing sports or BIF, 9 AF points only one cross type is just fine.

I have the 100d with 24mm F2.8 STM, great all rounder and street shooter.

Before I had a Nikon d5300 with 39 points, 9 cross type and a Fuji X-100 T with many.

100D shoots just as well.

And heck, I still get the best results with only one AF point for those subjects!  No matter what the body.
