A quick focal length comparison
9

)This morning's sunrise was very bland so I decided to do a quick focal length comparison with my humble selection of lenses. Hopefully they could be of use for someone. This test is totally unscientific, some pictures appear to be slightly crooked but I decided not to fix cause it would require some cropping afterwards. Raw files converted in ACR with the default settings except manual white balance and film simulation (Provia). The Fuji lenses in the set (16-50 II, 27 and 60) have their correction profile automatically applied while I manually applied the lens profile for the Samyang/Rokinon 12mm f/2. All pics shot at f/8, ISO 200, 1.5 sec.

12mm (Samyang 12mm f/2)

16mm (Fuji XC 16-50 OIS II)

23mm (Fuji XC 16-50 OIS II)

27mm (Fuji XF 27mm f/2.8)

34mm (was trying to get it exactly at 35; Fuji XC 16-50 OIS II)

50mm (Fuji XC 16-50 OIS II)

60mm (Fuji XF 60mm f/2.4 macro)

Honestly, I was surprised how large the difference is between 50 and 60mm but also 23 and 27. Next time I'll try to find a subject while I change the perspective and try to frame it identically for each focal length.

Re: A quick focal length comparison

Hi io,

Thx.  I guess I'm surprised by the difference between the 50mm of your zoom and the 60mm too.  I wonder if the 50mm of the zoom is accurate or whether the 50/2 would show the same FOV.....?  I've always thought that they'd be a bit closer.

Cheers, Rod

I did. I shouldn't have skipped also using my remote since the shot from the 60 came out blurry.

I wouldn't be surprised if the zoom doesn't really reach 50mm since advertised focal lengths are usually approximations. Still, I'm more than happy with its performance, especially for the $90 I paid for it. I have only briefly tested the 50 in a camera store but haven't done any comparisons.

Re: A quick focal length comparison

Because of the symmetry and repeating patterns, the subject is not showing too well how dramatic the differences are.
