Canon DCC-1880 case for G7X MkII mini-review
2

I originally bought a Case Logic QPB202 case for my newly-acquired G7X MkII but I had three issues with it:

1. It was a little bulky;

2. I didn't like the zipper on it as it would always scrape against the camera;

3. It wasn't easy enough to get the camera into and out of the case.

So I decided to get the Canon DCC-1880 case which is specifically made for the G7X MkII. Initial impressions are very positive. It's a discreet, compact case, it looks very good (even though it's fake leather), it has a strong magnetic fastener and there's no zipper to scrape the camera body.

The camera itself fits very snugly inside the case and is easy to insert and remove. There is also a belt loop on the back of the case (more on this later).

The magnetic fastener is surprisingly strong and there's a reassuring click when the front flap is correctly aligned and fastened.

Now the downsides: the top of the belt loop seems to be glued onto the case and I can see it coming apart very slight;y already, however I won't be using the belt loop so it's not an issue for me. It really doesn't look secure.

The shoulder strap is permanently attached to the case so cannot be removed. It's also a little thin so may dig into your shoulder. I would have preferred a much wider shoulder strap that was removable. However, the shoulder straps shortcomings also mean that is adds very little extra bulk to the case.

If you're in the UK then you can get a very good deal on this case if you purchase it from the Official Argos Shop on eBay. The cost is just 17.99GBP plus 3.95GBP delivery making a total of 21.94GBP.

Here's a few photos of the Canon DCC-1880 case:

I hope this mini-review is useful for anyone considering buying this case for their Canon PowerShot G7 X MkII.

Re: Canon DCC-1880 case for G7X MkII mini-review

I've had this case for well over a year now and love it. As you say, it's handsome and compact. Also, it's extremely sturdy and provides much better protection than those soft-sided nylon cases with zippers that scratch. I too never use the belt loop. I prefer to carry it in my daypack or the pocket of my cargo shorts until I'm ready start taking pictures, at which point the case gets removed and deposited back in the daypack or pocket. I use the minimalist wrist strap that came with the G7XII.

As far as the shoulder strap (which I have never used), I don't know why you say it is permanently affixed and can't be removed. I can see from your photos, it's identical to the one that came with mine. Just slide the nylon webbing thru the plastic slider and the strap is easily removed. If that's too difficult for you, get a pair of scissors and go snip, snip. You can then attach whatever strap you like to the side rings.

Just to let you know. There can be some quality problems. It's just glued together and fake stitches. Some are falling apart. See the reviews here:

Doh! My mistake - I didn't look at it carefully enough. You are right, it's very easily removable. Perfect, thank you so much!

Yes, I saw those reviews. Perhaps those buyers had fake products? The stitching seems fine to me on both the case and the shoulder strap.

I honestly cannot see a lack of quality with this case, but time will tell.

Through moderate use over the course of a year plus, including several 10 day trips during which the case and camera were constantly in and out of my daypack, the case looks exactly like the day I got it. Not a single scratch or scuff mark on the exterior (one of the benefits of fake leather :-)). At around $30, I don't expect it to be a "quality" product, but so far, it sure performs like one.

I had it shipped from England by an outfit called John Lewis.  As of last year when I bought it, I don't think it was available in the United States.

Would you say there’s enough room to fit a filter ring onto the G7X and it still fit in the case? Or is it a really snug fit?

It's a nice comfortable fit. The camera is cocooned within the case, yet can be stored and removed from the case very easily. However, the protrusion for the lens on the case doesn't really have any spare depth to accommodate anything attached to the lens.

I would say you have around 1mm of depth to play with on the lens fitting. This allows the magnetic fasteners to operate effectively and securely. Anything less and I reckon that the front flap may not attach securely.

Re: Canon DCC-1880 case for G7X MkII mini-review

Yes, there is definitely room for the receiver part of a filter adapter, but not with the filter attached. I have the Lensmate filter adapter affixed to the lens of my G7XII. The camera still easily fits in the case. However, if I attach the filter, it's a no-go. So, I just carry the filter itself separately and when I want to use it, it snaps right on in a jiffy.

Ok, nice, I guess the ones that fell apart are probably fakes.
