Best lenses for Canon 650d

Hi everyone,

I have the Canon 650d for few years and I'm pretty happy with it as a gear.

I have the kit lens 18-55 as only wide angle lens but recently I'm not so satisfied with the photos quality and planning to change it.

I've already done a small research and found the 18-135 usm, 18-135 stm and the 24-105 mm.

I managed to confuse myself between choosing one of this three or keep looking for better options :D, so I decided to ask for an advice here

What would be a good affordable lens suit the 650d?

What's wrong with the image quality with your kit lens?  Are the photos too soft?  The newer affordable STM kit lenses should be fine, if they aren't defective and the photographer knows how to get the best pictures from them.

Re: Best lenses for Canon 650d

If it's the kit lens that currently gets bundled its the EFS 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens.  Same lens that came bundled with my rebel T5.  It's okay in good light bit the just don't pop on mine like my EFS 17-55 f/2.8.  For a light weight walk around lens in daylight it's pretty good though.

What don't you like about the kit lens?  Do you need faster?  A fast prime may be a better option.  More reach?  Your option may be the way to go, or a super zoom may be better

Hi everyone,

Hi there, Welcome to the forum!

I have the Canon 650d for few years and I'm pretty happy with it as a gear.

I really enjoyed shooting with that camera too. Put about 50k shots through it the year I had it.

I have the kit lens 18-55 as only wide angle lens but recently I'm not so satisfied with the photos quality and planning to change it.

I had that lens too. As the others have mentioned, it's decent in good light (but requires really good technique when pushed to its limits). I found it adequate for a lot of general purpose shooting.

Do you know what's been bothering you about it lately? Sharpness? Focus? stabilization? Colors? Behavior?

Do you have a filter on it? Do you use a lens hood? Does it perhaps have something to do with the camera??

I've already done a small research and found the 18-135 usm, 18-135 stm and the 24-105 mm.

The two 18-135's will get you a wee bit better image quality. The big improvement is in the performance though. I really enjoy using my 18-135 STM. It's not quite sharp enough for critical work (IME), but I love the zoom range, and it makes a super walk-around lens.

Here's a sample (shot with my 70D). It's at ISO 800 though, so take that into account...

Here's a 100% crop to give you an idea of its sharpness (keep in mind that this is at ISO 800 too)...

See if it's any better than what you're getting (IQ-wise). And whether or not it is sharp enough for your needs.

OMG choosing a new lens is always so d@mn gut wrenching!!! Believe me, it doesn't get any easier as time goes on either!

so I decided to ask for an advice here

I've also shot with the 24-105 (L version) on a crop camera (70D), but I was never really thrilled with its images, and it just didn't go wide enough (to suit me) to use as a general-purpose lens. IMHO it's best suited for full frame use.

The new 24-105 STM I've never used.

Here's a good review site that I like to visit. You might like it for an additional opinion...

It really depends on what you find lacking in your current lens. And what types of shooting you like to do. There are other options out there too (like the aforementioned 17-55).

Best of luck, and write back soon.

Get something with a constant aperture the sigma 17-50 is about 350. The canon version is about 750 or the 18-35 1.8 sigma. But if you want wide the canon 10-18 and 50mm come in a kit for about 350
