Was it the Sigma ART 30 f/1.4 had great reviews and well priced. A lot shorter though....

they say the Pana Leica 42.5 1.2 is sharper...

I own both, I'd say for sharpness they're very similar, and very little in it. The Nocticron has a warmer render though. Both very nice lenses.

With m4/3 you need to stop down to f/2.8-5.6 range to get the person in focus from tip of the nose to ear, depending your distance for classical framings. F/1.8 is just too shallow and people drop out of focus.

That is what makes 4/3" format so great as for portraiture you need to stop lenses down for enough DOF, and that is why f/1.8 lenses offers if so wanted, shallower DOF than most people needs.

I think your confusing natural bokeh VS OP's brilliant skills at PP ...I shoot portraits with my 1.2 and 0.95 lenses and get all face parts portrait Clear unless very close to subject..remember these lenses act like 1.8 to 2.0 on a FF.....

My PP is Easy.. LR Classic CC --> Vivid --> Reduce Highlights --> Reduce Whites --> Bump up Shadows --> Bump up Contrast...
Then Synch on photos that is taken on the same time , light and angle..

I think your 4th an 8th photo have a little more done then that but very well done.....

Let me clarify what I said esp on the 8th photo was that the natural bokeh or did you PP some extra ....either way a great shot but if that was natural bokeh.. BRAVO....

You can stop it down if you like, but it surely isn't necessary (all with an 85 / 1.8 wide open on APS-C -- f/1.4 mFT equivalent -- unless otherwise noted):

f/1.6 mFT equivalent

f/1.6 mFT equivalent, but, more importantly, a wicked good looking model. : )

That is what makes 4/3" format so great as for portraiture you need to stop lenses down for enough DOF, and that is why f/1.8 lenses offers if so wanted, shallower DOF than most people needs.

I'm thinking the 75 / 1.8 is just fine wide open -- no "need" to stop it down. That said, if one wants more DOF, sure, stop it down.

man! you have great skin tones.....:)

i am tempted [ i may be wrong though] to think that u use some canon bodies from  at least one [if not two] generations ago !

very ..very ..nice portraits:)

Thank you for Robin for inviting us on his Shoot.
It is such a privilege to be allowed to shoot in such creative events.
And Most of all enjoy the great music prepared by this amazing singer song writer tandems. Where the songs are written and scored within 1 day, then performed the next day. Re: Low Light situation on a play- 3 months after getting the 75mm 1.8

The manager specifically that this Rehearsal play will have less than ideal Lighting and it is not a dressed rehearsal, no props also...

But I insisted in shooting, and I am not alone.
A few weeks back Robin has introduced me and sim into this place.
He gave us a chance to shoot in less than ideal condition and test the capability of our gear and our ability to adapt to this tough shooting condition:
Low Light, Moving subject, Tricky white Ballance, and navigating the crowd, while avoiding to distract the event.. All this rolled into one. Could be the toughest conditions I have been to and I really loved it... Because as it turns out the lens can handle it..

Not Knowing what the play is about..
I got the shock of my life.

Why, Because I never felt so old and a generation behind.

This play is about the youth of today, their Struggles, their Dreams, their Sexuality, their their aspirations, their triumph to find their identity, and Happiness.

So it is another overwhelming night for my senses.

2 Shooting Approach.

1.) Freeze the action - Shutter Priority 1/300 min, ISO max out ISO6400, Aperture at 1.8

2.) Gather more light - Aperture Priority @ 1.8, ISO max out ISO6400, Aperture fixed at 1.8. Shutter Speed is allowed to go as low as 1/60

COLOR:
Too Red --> BW
Too mix Color Lighting --> Desature each Colo using HSL sliders

FOCAL LENGTH:
75mm for Head Shots
25mm for Group Shots is included to show the whole context of the shoot.
and how this 2 lenses compliment each other.

Excellent shots, Robert.  Thanks for sharing.  I was in a bit of a funk with my photography, but you may have given me the kick in the seat of the pants that I needed, to get back into it.

By the way, I'm sorry about your mom's depression.  My mother suffered from it intermittently, and my brother inherited the genetic disposition for it in a major way.  So, I can identify with what you are going through, and the frustration you feel in not being able to do anything to make everything all right, no matter how much you want to.

Re: Low Light situation on a play- 3 months after getting the 75mm 1.8

great shots, robert!

i'm contemplating between the 75 and the 35-100 f2.8.

IQ wise, the 75 probably edges the 35-100, but the zoom would be more flexible, albeit 1 stop slower.

IF

the 75mm focussed closer, about 1:3 like the PRO lenses or even the P 1,7/42.5mm, it would be much more flexible and I would have it for a long time.

Most of the things I carry are Baby Diaper/Milk Bags with the Stroller.
so there is little room for a camera.
However Carrying my MFT camera and Primes. The bag is small enough to stay in my shoulder... with me not noticing or being bothered by it.
But when special Situations arise, I am ready to fire it up and Capture memories beautifully.

Re: They always say never meet your hero

Thanks for sharing, really lovely slots. I sold this lens recently not because the IQ isn't great, but because I always found the 150mm equiv focal length somewhat awkward, neither quite long enough and not quite short enough either. For my purposes I just found the 40-150/2.8 getting much more use and I couldn't justify keeping the 75/1.8 in the camera bag.

Having seen your beautiful images though I'll now experiment more with tele shots of my toddler, so far I've been photographing him mostly at close range!
