Excellent camera, buggy phone apps

I want to like the phone, but we have two in the family, and both have some irritating bugs with messages app  voice to text (works when it feels like it), and even the photo app while displaying images after you take them, (screen goes black after a split second).   Both issues clear after reboots... for a while....

You mean the Google camera app, or Google Photos app?

The Pixels have the latest software, so sometimes it can be a bit buggy, until the bugs are sorted out. That's the price for the latest software sometimes.

The camera and Googles approach to Computational photography are what I like about the phone - just like the article here on DPReview, it does perform fast and with great results.

As far as bugs go, I've worked in computers, networks and software development for 37 years and seen a lot of different issues, so, yes, new code can be buggy, but seems the Pixel2 displays a lot more issues than I had with my Nexus 5x.  Anyway, I have 2 of these phones, both have the same issues with apps like Messages that I use extensively.

I'm in the market for a new phone and I see a lot of these issues... having an android phone myself already (Honor 8) - I know what you mean.  Google has just too many apps and it gets confusing... and - half the time I'm not sure if I should update my apps, my OS, my EMUI?

Love the freedom on Android... but sometimes I feel like the Locked In approach of Apple is better for phones..

I think with Android it depends on what company you buy from and even what phone.

I think you are right... I just looked at my list of installed google apps though.... half of these I have no idea what they are or why I would use them... Google Play movies?  Play Books?  How are these different than just the Play Store?

Why do I need/want Google Hangouts vs Google+ vs plain Google apps?

Too much stuff.... suppose I could research and get rid of some of these...
