need i ideas about waterproofing an old NX1000 (DIY)
1

Hi,

I just got an old used NX1000 for $50, and I also have a 16mm/f2.4 I'm not using much, and I though maybe i could make this combo permanently waterproof instead of buying an action camera

Looking for tips/methods on how to make the NX1000 body waterproof without adding too much bulk. I don't care about how it looks like, or the fact the i will not be able to replace the lens anymore. I was thinking of  applying silicon sealant generously on most of the exterior (with a thinner layer over the buttons on the back, so i'll still be able to press them), but i'm still trying to figure out what am i going to do with the mode dial and on/off button.

Welcoming any suggestions,

Thanks

What you want to do is not easy.
Actually, I believe it is VERY HARD to do it properly!
BUT, you may find some feaseable alternatives.

I use an "regular" camera at Niagara Falls.
An UV filter on lens + a sun hud well fixed (not really water sealed), and the camera and the lens in a transparent plastic bag, sealed around the hud.
It has performed well, the bag was with little air and large enough to allow any move / command to camera. No water drop under UV filter, just nice!
PROs: waterproof - sort of.
CONs: the plastic bag has to be replaced after some (short) time.

I saw last year something similar made specifically from silicon with an glass sealed on a side. If I re-found it, I'll post here!

You could use something like this https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/724863-REG/DiCAPac_WP570_WP_570_Waterproof_Case.html

Re: need i ideas about waterproofing an old NX1000 (DIY)

Thank you for the suggestions

Iv'e decided to go with the permanently sealed design (with sillicon adhesive), and i think Iv'e figured most of it out, I just have a question regarding the battery charging.

Since the body will be permanently sealed, the lens, SD card and battery will not be able to eject (permanent lens is ok, permanent SD is ok since i can transfer files wirelessly, just need a way to supply power for charging). I'm thinking of the best ways to charge the battery, and iv'e came up with that:

I will solder wires to the terminals inside the camera, and they will be available for use outside the sealant. Then, in order to charge the battery, i will connect them with the corresponding wires on the battery charger (will later replace wires with proper waterproof terminals).

My question is that: The battery is 7.4v, and the charger supplies 8.4v to charge it - since the wires will be connected to the battery and camera in parallal, the charger will supply 8.4v to both of them, which is ok for charging a battery (batteries usually use a slightly higher voltage for charging), but will it damage the camera to receive that 8.4v ? Or maybe it doesnt even matter as long as the camera is turned off (circuit is open)?

Thank you for your help

I think that the bit high voltage will be OK.

I do not know how you intent to use.
If underwater, you have to protect the cables, else a short will damage battery.

Also I am considering that when you apply the sealant over buttons, you might have:
- going under and affecting the contacts,
- forbiden to change position on buttons if you have to rotate one as ASPM, focus, manual aperture or shutter, any other settings you might want.

The button section will be covered with a thin layer of clear plastic or latex first, then the sealant applied on top, so the sealant will bot be applied directly on the buttons šŸ™‚
As per the cables, yes the plan is to solder and glue a sealed port, unless i figure out how to seal the whole battery compartment.

If the lens is also sealed, how is it going to focus ?

Wow ! How did I not think about.
You are right, but some lenses have internal focus and even zoom.
"efef21", you have to check it !

I know that the S lenses, 16-50 and 50-150 have internal focus, are factory S(ealed).
But I presume the others are not.

the lens is going to be covered with something like a transparent cup that will leave some space for focusing. This cup will be glued to the body with the silicone sealant

I first want to open the body and fill the inside with the silicone sealant as much as i can (withour getting anything on the sensor or buttons of course), just for that extra precaution.

Another problem you could have by fully sealing the camera with silicone , is heat build up.

That camera was not designed to be sealed as the WP bodies are , so the components inside could be damaged by heat. Probably not a problem underwater or in cold weather (maybe) but it could be for example when at home transferring the data via WiFi.

Thats a good point my friend, is the NX1000 known to overheat? I would have gotten one of these DiPac bags but problem is it is not as snug as i would want, and it actually quite expensive.

You just need a ZIPPER BAG.

or plus a step up filter ringĀ + silicon sealant at filter
