This is the most underrated lens around.

I have been using this lens for years and it is outstanding.

Both on my crop camera and FF , never failed to produce great pics.

Don't listen to the bad reviews, there all rubbish .

An amazing lens.

Glad it works for you...

The one I had matched the reviews - halation / coma even in the centre wide open

https://www.lenstip.com/253.7-Lens_review-Canon_EF_28_mm_f_1.8_USM_Coma_and_astigmatism.html

And edges / corners mush

https://www.lenstip.com/253.4-Lens_review-Canon_EF_28_mm_f_1.8_USM_Image_resolution.html

That said it dis AF well and I'm sure good prints at smaller sizes possible

Unless you have a super-copy somehow?  If so great stuff.

Re: Superb Lens

Maybe I had a bad one then because I never was pleased with the image quality from the one I had.

I had this lens for a while and always liked it. Good build, super fast and accurate auto focus and good image quality. Center sharpness was ok, edges not so good, but overall ok. I don't think it's a great lens, but it's not as bad as some reviews make it sound.

How does it compare to the Canon 24L F1.4 regarding rendering, color, and sharpness?

Have you ever used that lens?

I've had both lenses and in comparison, the 28mm is absolute junk.

What other lenses have you used in comparison in order to gauge what you consider is good or not?

How do you know how it compares to other lenses available on the market today?

Your 5 star rating surprises me too. Mine was very soft wide open, especially in the corners. I had to stop down a couple stops  to get the center sharp.

you must have low standards...

even back in it's day this lens was so-so at best, never even beginning to get sharp until f2.2. by today's standards and at its price there are much better options. i'm really surprised Canon has not discontinued this dog.

Hmmm... when compared to the 28mm f2.8 is...

Wide open (ugh, look at those corners)

Even stopped down to f2.8, the corners are still horrendous compared to the 28m is.

At more than 3x the price, I would hope the 24L outperforms the 28 f/1.8. I think the question is does 3x the price equal 3x the performance? I'm going to say that it doesn't. Now even though it's not a linear relationship between price and performance, for some people it's absolutely necessary to have that incremental improvement while for others it's more about justifying their expensive lens to themselves and for others justifying why they purchased the less expensive option.

I really like my 28mm. It does what I need it to do and I don't need to be on the edge of its performance envelope so I can easily live within it's limitations. I do think the reputation is worse than reality as many people that comment negatively about it are just regurgitating what they read on a review site. It falls in the middle between a basic kit lens and an L lens and I'm glad that Canon has given us options for different needs and budgets.

Owned it - sold it - did not meet my standards even on a low resolution 20D and 5D classic.  Sigma 24mm Art is brilliant in comparison.

You ask the wrong question.  Its not about $$, 3 times better, etc.

Its about quality.

Let me put it this way, if you paid $10 for the 28mm, that was a bad deal for you because the quality is horrible.  No value, bad deal.

Now if you paid $1,300 for a used in excellent condition 24L, that would be a HUGE BARGAIN, a GREAT DEAL.  Because the quality is supreme, optics are fantastic.

Just because something cost a lot less does not mean it provides value, or is a good bargain.

Can you get your $$ back??

This lens is for bokeh-balls. We shouldn't expect it to be super sharp, even though it is quite sharp in the middle (on FF), at least my copy. I think that it works great for portraits and close-ups (like food or flora). Definitely not a landscaping lens. It seems to have good edge sharpness from F5.6, when shooting at close distances (like up to 4 meters), but things change at longer focusing range. It gets mushy. Still, great for action around you - kids, pets, selfies maybe :).
