Have you ever had this on the GH4 ? "Set Clock" on power on. Built-in battery dead?

Hey all,

Any time I leave the GH4 without battery for a few days, once I turn it back on, the time/date has been forgotten.

The manual says to leave a battery in the cam for 24 hours to recharge it :

I have done that, but the phenomenon still happens a few days later (not 3 months!).

In case this built-in battery is actually wasted, can one replace it ?

Thanks!

To my knowledge you can't replace the internal battery.

Here's a case with an LX100 where the person had the same, or a similar issue.

Looks like he fully charged the battery and left the camera on overnight and that solved it.  Worth a try.

Stay thirsty, my friends.
I got some batteries that were given out free of charge.
I’m reading a book about anti-gravity. I just can’t put it down.

It happens to me with my G7 and GM1 that both were sunk to a lake. Whenever I change the battery, I need to set the date. The GM1 also slowly drains the battery even if it is not on, so I don't keep the battery in and need to constantly change the date. It is my 3rd/4th body anyway, and I rarely use it, so this is not a real issue to me.

It's a shame to hear that internal battery cannot be replaced.

Keep the battery in. It does not take many hours to charge, not days anyway, so it should not be a problem, unless for some reason it is.

Had it happen on other cameras. Tend to keep my cameras here for a very long time before a so called upgrade. The NEX-7 is over 6 years old as an example and the E-M10 is getting older as well now. So it wouldn't surprise me if it does happen to them as well.

Other cameras just don't seem to have an issue with that problem.

All the best and IMO, it's not that surprising. Maybe on a GH4 it is.

All the best.

Danny.

To comply with US recycling laws, most cameras do not use a "battery" for memory backup. Most states require that all batteries be easily removed when the product is recycled. Instead, they use a large value capacitor, commonly referred to as a "Gold Cap". A charged battery will charge the capacitor which by itself draws an insignificant amount of power. Its not designed for long term backup. It's pretty much assumed that most people leave a battery installed in the camera. My G9 draws <1ma of power, so the battery's on the shelf natural discharge is probably greater than the amount of power the camera consumes keeping the cap charged.

The internal battery (or capacitor) will discharge, but it should be a matter of weeks, not days. I have owned perhaps a dozen Panasonic G-series and have never had a problem like this. The internal battery only runs down if I leave a camera for several weeks without use.

I suggest you contact Panasonic service, especially if the camera is still in warranty.

Had it on my e-m5. I’d actually be surprised if these things had an internal battery. I’d be expecting a cap instead.
