Rebel T6 vs 40D

Hello everyone,

I have 2 camera's and wanted some input as to which everyone believes is better.

I was gifted a T6 last year by my wife and have become more interested in photography over the past year.  On Easter while at my In Laws my MIL brought out her basically unused 40D with 17-85 USM and 70-300 USM lens and told me to keep it.

At first I was only on planning on using the glass itself but playing around one day I tried out the 40D and fell in love with the viewfinder, how fast it focuses, and overall how fast it seemed to respond compared to my T6.

Here is a comparison chart:

https://www.imaging-resource.com/cameras/canon/40d/vs/canon/t6/

I see the 40D is only at 10MP vs 18MP that the T6 has but I am not sure how big of a deal this really is on overall image quality. THe other big hesitiation I have with the 40D is that I would need CF cards and I have already invested in a few highspeed SD cards.

I mostly use the camera for taking pictures of the little one but I am most interested in architecture, macro, and even some dusk/night street shots. My most used lens I have is a Cannon 50mm 1.8.

I know the real answer is buy an 80D but that is probably a year away if I am being realistic.

Anyway I would appreciate any comments on how an older middle of the road camera compares to a "modern" entry level.

Thanks in advance.

None of the above.

I would seriously look at selling both bodies right now and getting an SL2 (for the DPAF alone!).

Your "little One" will thank you for it.

I agree with selling both for an SL2. But if that's not an option, t6 for quality and 40D for performance. Which is more important to you?

For family album, most important is image quality. After few years, anyway this "quality" will became odd, but make your best for it. The size and the details of images, will matter after 20 years, when your child will look at them.

In my opinion: use most T6 and only for special blur or some efects D40.

What remain are the photos, is not important the name  or the kind of the camera.

Re: Rebel T6 vs 40D

I think that video is the must for children shots and 40D has none.

On the other side , 40D has perfect speed and great handles, thumb wheel for one.

Modern cameras have better high ISO with less noise for low light pics, even my 50D didn’t shine in this. Afaik T6 has wifi connectivity, which is fine for posting kid pics to the family.

CF card is no pain as I suspect that MIL gave you some.

Keep and enjoy both of them.

P. S. My present set is the 80D and the SL1, love both of them.

IMHO for the family album is not so important the maximal  IQ, but the amount of keepers in a reasonable quality, as family and children moments are quick and non-repeatable mostly.

I doubt , most of my family does judge the bokeh
