We have a g7 and g85. The g85’s better but it doesn’t take better pictures.

I think it does or at lease it enables me to take better pictures

Split the difference. Upgrade the camera and pickup a Used O 9-18 lens.

Also, the value proposition is worth outlining.  Buy handbag today cost $200 and value tomorrow $20 to zero.  Buy a lens today at $600, value tomorrow $450 to $500.

I have a G7. For about $800 I could get the Pana 7-14mm f/4, and old but good lens that would give me a wide angle range I don't have now. Or, for $900 I could update to a G85 - which was reviewed here as "the camera the G7 should have been" - much less shutter shock (although, I only have a few examples of shutter shock), in camera focus stacking (the G7 doens't have that), weather sealed.

I shoot raw with the G7 and probably would still shoot raw with a G85. I like the G7 just fine. ... I am conflicted. Opinions please?

IMO the main reason for switching to a G85 would be the IBIS feature.  If you don't feel a need for it, then get the 7-14.

Oh boy... When I see such posts comparing a new lens vs a new camera I always get fidgety. For me a new lens with a completely different FL range will most often than not outweigh a new camera, especially if the old one was already excellent for 95% of use cases.

I have the 7-14 and can vouch that it is a terrific lens if you don't care much about filters and are careful about flare situations.

I don't believe much in the shutter-shock issue which should apparently  plague my GX8 (never seen it in almost 2 years) and if it happens. it is with selective lenses. In-focus camera stacking is a nice gadget, but unless you are really in that sort of thing, that is all it really is, a gadget. As for weather sealing, my GX8 is the first weather sealed device I've used in 45 years of photography and I live in Canada; never had a problem yet. The only main reason I'd spring for the G85 would be to use dual IS with long telephotos such as the PL 100-400.

Bottom line, I'd suggest keeping the G7 and getting the lens...

Agreed. I might add I bought mine more than a year ago for 700$ Cdn so 800$ US for a used copy now seems a bit high. Patience...

With ever upgrade model of a brand of cameras comes pros and cons.

I had to chose between the G85 and the G7 but chose the G7 as it is lighter and smaller. The battery last longer also. There was a bigger price different at the time.
