Not a big video guy, but I do use my Sony RX100M3 to make time lapses once in a while.

Me too. FP4, HP5, and Tri-X.

As the length of a thread approaches 150, the probability that someone will make the obvious "it's not the camera, it's the photographer" remark approaches 1.

Me too. Mainly B&W - an arms length was 36 exposures with my Canon AE-1.

video is the single most important driver for mirrorless (evf). W/o the need for video, dslr is just perfect for photography.

No.

Agreed. Reasons that are just as important or more important (subjective) for people to use EVFs over OVFs:

  • The ability to see your final product before you take it (causing a reduction or elimination to chimping)
  • The ablility to reduce size
  • The ability to reduce weight
  • The ability to more easily review your photos in bright sunlight
  • The ability to see more information in the viewfinder (focus peaking, zebras, histograms...)

I'm not saying OVFs don't have their advantages (though personally, I see few), but I would not say video is the main driver (most of the people I know buy mirrorless cameras for photography not videography), and many would argue mirrorless is actually the one that's better for photography than DSLRs. Almost all the photographers I know never had DSLRs and went to mirrorless, had a DSLR and went to mirrorless, or have a DSLR and want to switch to mirrorless. Some of them shoot a lot of video with their ILCs, but most don't.

Re: Video Usage Poll

I could agree with you for the reasons you detailed.  The problem for me is the size and eye relief of the EVF is not as comfortable to use as a good DSLR OVF.

Re: Video Usage Poll

That's understandable, but have you tried some of the better EVFs out there? I'm not saying you haven't, but in case you haven't, there are pretty big differences in various EVFs (magnification, size, resolution, brightness, image quality etc...). They mostly range from 1.4-3.6MP, 0.59x-0.78x, and 0.39"-0.5". There are some that are better or worse but I tried to choose from ones that are most common. And as you can see, there can be quite a diversity in EVFs here. But again, I understand some prefer OVFs and that's fine. It's pretty subjective.
