Exactly... use the zoom until you realize why you need a prime (and if you never realize why, no problem).

The 35mm f1.4 is a must have lens IMO. In fact I think the Must have primes would be the 16mm f1.2, 23mm f2, 35mm f1.4, 60mm f2.4 macro (for portraits as well as close-up work). And maybe either the 80mm macro or the 90mm f2.

I did own the 18-55, but sold it after I got the 35/2. The prime is really specialized for just the photography I like. Non posed pictures of people with a sligtly tighter perspective, but that still includes a bit of the surroundings.

The zoom OTOH is a much better alround lens.
