olympus 75-300 II vs panasonic 45-150 + digital 2x?

Hello.

A very noob question.

My actual lenses on my Olympus E-M1 are:
- 4/3 olympus 14-54 II 2.8-3.5 (that's on 90% of the time)
- panasonic 20 1:1.7-20
- panasonic 45-150 1:4.5-6

I'd like to get more zoom, so was thinking of getting a m4/3 olympus 75-300 II 1:4.8-6.7 instead of the panasonic 45-150.
Just having a doubt now if that is a good idea or I should keep the 45-150 and use the 2x camera's digital teleconverter when I need more zoom (not too often).

I'm sure oly 75-300 is better than pana 45-150 + 2x, but so much I should get one and sell the other one?

Thanks!

2x converter is just digital zoom. You can do that afterwards by cropping in or scaling the image. Not ideal and optical zoom is always preferred but if you only need it occasionally then give it a go and see if it’s ok for you

You already have the 45-150, so why not go out at the weekend and see what quality you get from the digital teleconverter?  If it's good enough for your purposes (for now), you don't need to get the bigger lens.

You'll need good technique at an effective 300mm, so if you're not happy with the results, make sure that your technique is not at fault.  (In other words, use a tripod and shoot in good light with a fast shutter speed!)

In old money, 150mm + DTCR on m43 does the job of a 600mm lens.  That used to be regarded as specialised glass for expert photographers.   In theory the 70-300mm ought to give you superior results to those you get by cropping and enlarging a shorter lens.  But, in the real world, it may not, or the advantage may be one that you don't actually need.

That's true, thanks!

I'll try going around and also adding a 2x zoom to the photos I've already taken with that lens, even if being not a pro and having not the 75-300 II I'm not sure I can understand too much if they will be good enough or not.

Just realized also that if I'd use that 2x digital teleconverter with the 75-300 I would have the 301-600 that I wouldn't have keeping the 45-150 (but I actually have no idea if I'll ever need that zoom).

I suppose it depends on what you are shooting, but my general inclination is toward getting yourself a good lens rather than fooling around with spreading pixels out in order to crop a shot. Here get ahold of this lens -

Quality from the 75-300 is going to be better than the 45-150 with 2x zoom.  Its really that simply.  Itll be the same if you crop in post.

Here is a shot I took with th 75-300  11  on my E-M1 .1      I cropped the shot about 50%  and changed aspect to 16:9.

I have the Olympus 40-150r and the 75-300 ii. I prefer the 75-300 in most cases for the reach (starts to get a bit soft after about 250mm or more. I can often live with the gap between the long end of my 12-40 and 75mm. The trick isto wait for a sale 😃
