EOS M10 Selfie Fail
2

Had the original M, loved it. Being a bit vain I upgraded to the M10 as I do enjoy the benefit of a tilt up screen for selfies. Well actually it's great if you are a couple on holiday and you don't want to ask someone to take a pic.

The Sony a5000 and Samsung NX 3000 had this down pat. Set a 10 second timer, extend the selfie stick/monopod and the camera would take an a great, in focus photo. I'm finding it a little harder on the M10. It seems to lock focus when I press the shutter for the 10 seconds, so when the monopod is extended if the face has moved it is out of focus. It even says in the manual not to change the distance between the subject and the camera after pressing the shutter.

Am I doing something wrong? It's proving really hard and I had hoped with face detection and the flip up screen it would be easier. Maybe I'm missing something. Phones have all this technology built in, but the pics from a 5 megapixel front camera fron a cellphone are average at best.

There is a demand for selfies with DSLRs and mirrorless, otherwise the flip out screens wouldn't be so popular but it is disappointing that even though the newly released 200d has a selfie mode it doesn't have smile shutter and will lock focus on shutter being pressed.

Re: EOS M10 Selfie Fail

You can use the phone app and hold it in your hand and trigger the timer/focus once it's  extended out on the monopod.  Or use a wider lens that can be shot from arms length.

Re: EOS M10 Selfie Fail

Most cameras focus-locks after pressing the shutter button(for timed selfie) of course. I notice that only Fuji cameras focuses after the timer is done( like iphones).

Thats why my favorite selfie camera is eos m3(with the infrared remote), and it works well with poles. I have tried panasonic gf7 but smile shutter does not work well. Unfortunately, for your camera ( and other eos m bodies without infrared), your only option is smart shutter but it can only do jpegs( like my g3x)

Re: EOS M10 Selfie Fail

Some random observations.

Your friends and family probably already know what you look like anyway.

If the camera is locking focus before you extend it on the selfie stick then work out what that extended distance will be and lock focus on something at that distance, like your feet.

If it's getting you out of focus then depth of field is not huge, in which case do you want you or your location to be in focus. Do you want people to think "who is that in front of the Taj Mahal" or "what is that shape behind ageninmo?" If you want both in focus then use your 11-22 wide and with a fairly small aperture.

Lots of poor excuses can be made, but it's still very irritating, and something I've always wished Canon would address (with the option).

I think the selfie mode in the 200D (I'm assuming you're referring to the flip out screen) is aimed mainly at vloggers, since it does video pretty well.

Long standing issue that remains unfixed

I, like you and many others have been complaining about this irritating issue for many years now.

But nothing has be done about it.

Canon doesnt listen to what it is a very simple and reasonable demand.

Yes you can use the app, but the 10sec selftimer would be a much simpler and faster solution if the camera had the option to focus just before the shot is taken.

Canon is stupid and irritating.
