Small, light, versitile yet not eye-popping

This lens is showing it's age, as sharpness is on the soft side.

On the other hand, it's such an afforadable wide L lens that you are willing to take with you everyday.

If you can afford, by all means go get an 16-35mm F4L IS. However if you want something cheap and light, this lens is still worth it.

I remember when I first started looking at better lenses and considering my first L, there were two 'gateway drug' lenses which were keenly priced (by L standards) to suck you into the L habit. One was the original non-IS 70-200/4L; the other was the 17-40/4L.

The 17-40 wasn't a great choice for me at the time, as I had a crop body and several other lenses were/are better value on crop. However I did try a borrowed copy and was immediately impressed by the handling and build quality. Image quality is something I've learned about mainly from other peoples pictures, and it does seem to perform well stopped down to f/8 or further for the typical landscape shot.

If you can afford, by all means go get an 16-35mm F4L IS.

I agree with that too
