Is upgrading to 200D worth it?

Is upgrading to 200D worth it?

Hello there! Right now I'm shooting with Canon EOS 1300D. Now I'm considering getting a new body which would probably be 200D. Is the upgrade worth it?

My main concern is low light performance and noise related to it. Shooting with 1300D I'm getting noise at ISO 800. Going up with the ISO the image starts to look horrible. I like to shoot city- and landscapes and overviews from different events. Therefore my F-number is always above F/5.6. This leads to ISO being high.

How the 200D performs in low light? For example shooting with ISO 3200 or 6400 is there much noise compared to 1300D?

Also how fast the 200D focus in low light conditions? My 1300D likes to hunt focus for a long time in low light condition...

Thanks in advance!

Hi 'Killer. Welcome to the forum!

The short answer is that the latest 24 MP Dual Pixel sensor will gain you about a stop over the older 18 MP sensor (in the noise department).

Can you/do you ever use a tripod? Does your camera have a "Handheld Night Scene" mode? Or "Multi Shot Noise Reduction?"

To help us, can you post your settings in detail (incl autofocus method. Live View?). Lens(es)?

TIA,

R2

The new sensor in the SL2 is the same as the 80D and is Canon's best APC sensor to date. It has brought Canon into being competitive with the best sensors available. If you're a Canon person you will like/love the SL2. I have the SL1 also and the SL2.  Other than an additional stop of low noise ISO, it  has a few must have features for my style of shooting. The articulating screen is a must. Low angles, high angles and every shooting angle possible. Somewhat faster auto focus is a bonus. The dual pixel technology is the killer advance. And finally for me is the exposure compensation button near your thumb. I am always tweeking my exposure and going through the menu is takes too much time for moving subjects. If you need more features Canon has a slew of other choices, but nothing beats the size/weight and stealth of the SL2. Good luck!

I'd say it's a great upgrade overall, but it will only give you about half stop of noise performance. Compared this with my old EOS M with the sensor you have in your 1300D, and EOS M6 sensor, which is the same as SL2/200D. While I absolutely do recommend you that cam, you probably need to kick other things up a notch. Master your exposure skills, postprocessing skills and maybe add a faster lens to the combo, or even try to make better light conditions to your scene. All that can give you couple stops of noise performance.

Anyway, I hope you enjoy your new SL2

Thanks!

I have a tripod but carrying it around every single time when shooting in low light conditions is not what I would like to do. Especially when going into live events or shooting nature for example just after sunset. The tripod is nice and useful when shooting night sky. However mostly I'm shooting at wide angle with F-number being 5.6 or above (often it is around 8-11).

I don't have a handheld night scene setting in my camera. I have heard of it and seen a few samples with pretty nice results. It really interests me and I would like to get my hands on it. Do you know anything about the handheld night scene setting?

I don't think my camera has a multi shot noise reduction. Speaking of noise do you know how high the ISO can go in SL2 without the noise ruining the picture?

I'm using autofocus most of the time. As a metering mode I'm using center-weighted average and during live view I'm using FlexiZoneAF as AF method.

As a lens I have been using my kit lens with no STM. I have heard that dual pixel autofocus with STM lens is a good combination. I hope that is the case with SL2.

Thanks for the help.

I'm indeed Canon person and I started photography with the 1300D as noted in my post. I have been learning basics and few additional tricks and now I feel I need more features. 1300D is missing a lot of features I would like to test and maybe get to use more often.

Do you know how the timelapse feature works? It really interests me and 1300D lacks it.

Also do you know how high ISO can be without the noise ruining the picture? I have been reading all marketing speeches but I want to hear it from a casual photographer. Right now my Canon 1300D shows noice at ISO 800. I hope that isn't the case with SL2.

I have also heard it has a silent mode for taking photos. Is it really silent when taking photos?

In my country I can get SL2 body for 550 euros which is a steal! You basically get so many good features for such a low price. Many people like to compare it to 80D. They say it is like 80D but without so many focus points.

I get ya. I really hate carrying around a tripod too!  Have you ever used a "String Tripod?"

The better Rebels would have these modes.

If you don't mind jpeg files, these modes can really help to keep the camera steady and reduce noise in the process.

Depends on your tolerance and how good you and/or your camera are at noise reduction.  You'll gain a full stop in noise characteristics by upgrading to the 24 MP Dual Pixel sensor (not only is the noise reduced, but the fine-grained nature of the noise makes noise reduction more effective).

If you want even better performance, check out full frame.  $$$

I'm using autofocus most of the time. As a metering mode I'm using center-weighted average and during live view I'm using FlexiZoneAF as AF method.

The Live View AF is worlds better than the 1300D's.

Thanks for the help.

Love STM lenses with my Dual Pixel sensors.  They are fast, accurate, and some are completely silent!  AF is very well-behaved.  I don't know if you ever need longer focal lengths, but the 18-135 STM kit lens is my favorite walk-around lens.

Lots to think about!

Sensors in 80d/sl2/latest rebels are very close to D7500 which is bench mark without late tech like dual gain. They are behind  by 1/2 stop at very low iso and catch up with D7500 as we move up.

You work for Canon marketing?

Checking out the studio comparison scene,  the SL2 has about 1/3 to 1/2 stop better raw noise at iso 1600, compared to the 1300D.

That's not the whole story.  The 24 MP files respond much better to NR than those from the old 18 MP sensors.  I get a full stop advantage.
