Need advice on upgrading

Hello

I own a Canon Rebel Xsi which is also known as the 450D. I came in the kit which has the three lenses . It isn't a bad camera but it is old and the photo quality is not as great as I would want it to be.

I am a beginner photographer and I primarily take photos more so like portraits and sometimes of scenery. I usually take photos of my friends/myself when we go somewhere outdoors, at museums, at the beach, etc. So I usually only use the 18-55mm the camera came with.

With that being said, I do not know whether to buy a whole new camera or just a better lense? if so which camera or lens? I am also on a budget so looking for simple but a noticeable difference from my current camera.  Any advice is appreciated. thanks.

Welcome to the forum Glocrazy.

Even though there have been upgrades to your kit lenses in the time since you purchased them, I think you'd benefit the most from a new camera body. In particular one of the bodies that incorporates the new 24 MP Dual Pixel sensor (77D, T7i, 200D).

You'll not only benefit from the higher resolution, but you'll also be able to set higher ISOs than you were using previously (with all the associated benefits). Not to mention the addition of a truly usable Live View LCD shooting mode (and excellent AF for videos).

Plus the overall shooting experience is much improved via the quicker response, excellent touchscreen (incl Touch Focusing, and Touch Shutter), and a whole host of new features. You might even consider getting the body in a money-saving kit form with a new 18-55 STM kit lens (or better). And/or adding the outstanding bang-for-your-buck 50mm STM for low light and/or DOF control.

It's the kind of move that will seriously re-energize your photography!

Happy shopping,

R2

You seem like a good candidate for the SL2 or T7i.  Either one should serve you well.  The main difference between them is the auto focus (AF) system each uses.  The T7i's AF system is faster and more capable.  The SL2's AF is just fine for all but faster moving subjects.  The trade off is the SL2 costs from $150-$200 less than the T7i.  Also, whatever you buy get it with the kit lens.  Canon has improved the 18-55mm kits lens that comes with each of these cameras a huge amount from the one you have if it came with the XSi as a kit lens.

Coming from the XSi to the SL2 or T7i will be a massive upgrade and I think you will be very pleased with either camera along with its kit lens.
