Canon T7i cr2 files and Win 10

I got a new T7i at the first of the year (love it by the way)  and am just now trying to open the raw files in WIN 10.  Windows 10 will not open these raw files.  It opens the Canon Sl1 files just fine but will not with my new camera.  I have tried downloading some fixes after doing research and get messages that these downloads do not apply to my computer. Has anyone run into this and do you have any suggestions?  Thanks in advance  Stelle

Check for a Microsoft "Windows 10 Camera Codec Pack."

If this doesn't work, then perhaps MS hasn't updated the Codec for the T7i yet.

Good luck,

I could be wrong, but I think Microsoft stopped updating their raw file codecs at around the time Windows 10 was released.  I have solved the problem by download FastPictureViewer's Codec pac, which costs about $9.99. You can download it then, you can see thumbnails and bring into photos taken in newer cameras.  Also, you can directly import your raw files into Lightroom or view them in Photoshop if you have either program once you update camera raw.

Thank you so much for the info on the codec pack.  I downloaded it and it does exactly what I want it to.  Thanks for your help!

Have you installed Canon's Digital Photography Professional 4. 8. 30.0? It's free and is Canon's RAW editor.. I use it with my t7i CR2 files on my Win7. BTW: the CR2 thumbnails don't display in Windows explorer.. so I downloaded the free FastStone Image Viewer to preview my CR2 files which I then open and edit in DPP, export as 8-bit TIFFs and then polish off in Photoshop

The FastStone won't view the files while they are on the camera. You have to offload them first..

FastPictureViewer Codec Pack

FastPictureViewer Codec Pack works fine on Windows 10.  I'm using it on several Win 10 laptops.

The only problem is that it was last updated on April 18, 2017.  It doesn't support the new .CR3 raw format (EOS M50, EOS R, and most likely any new cameras Canon releases.)

I have an M50 and it is a pain--I have resorted to shooting raw+JPEG solely to have some way of identifying images in Windows Explorer (I normally only shoot raw.)

But it works fine with .CR2.

Re: FastPictureViewer Codec Pack

I just installed FastPictureViewer's Codec and it works fine with my T7i raw files, displaying them in Windows File Explorer.

Re: Canon T7i cr2 files and Win 10

What is the reason for opening the RAW file inside the Windows? Can you handle them any way in there? My approach is to work on it in the Lightroom or similar, including making selection and export them to jpg. I know it doesn’ t answer your question, just a hint for the workflow. i could use Irfanview or similar I have installed but I didn’t need it, yet. Tell me...

I don't "open" T7i CR2 files in Windows File Explorer, but I do like to be able to see the image there (as a large thumbnail).

Thanks for the link to the FastPictureViewer Codec Pack I was lost without this.

I despair at Canon sometimes. They get so much right with their consumer products, but then fail massively when it comes to supporting customers on one of the worlds most common operating systems. I don't see the logic in some Canon exec thinking it would be a good idea to make viewing files so difficult.

I don't use Lightroom.  I use Photoshop.  I shoot 100% raw and I want to see the image as a thumbnail in Windows Explorer.  When I want to edit an image I can open it in ACR directly from Windows Explorer.

FastPictureViewer Codec Pack works for .CR2 but not for .CR3, so I am reduced to shooting raw+jpeg to have image thumbnails (the JPEG) I can see in Windows (then I open the .CR3 file that has no image thumbnail.)

I alternately use BreezeBrowser Pro to navigate folders of images.  BB doesn't support .CR3 either.

I know that many people use Lightroom but it doesn't work for me.  I have too many images (like scans that need a lot of cloning and content aware filling) that don't work with Lightroom.

I've heard that FastStone now supports .CR3.  I haven't tried that yet with .CR3.

FastStone Image Viewer 6.9 does not support CR3 files. I get a black image when loading a CR3 file...

Do you know if this would work with Adobe Photoshop Elements 14, thanks?

Sorry for bringing back an old thread, but wondering if anyone has found a way of seeing thumbnails of CR3 files in Windows 10?

And, I do want to respond that this really isn't a Canon problem, maybe a Microsoft "problem" or just something that doesn't seem important enough to any of the big companies to address.  Basically, Windows 10 came out before a bunch of the new cameras came out.  I had the same problem with a Sony and my 5d mk iv when they first came out.  Before Windows 10, you could periodically download Codec updates, which solved the problem.  They are not doing it any more. FastPictureViewer Codec Pack solved the problem for me with multiple cameras and brands, but they haven't updated their package for a couple of years. Actually DPP4 works well as does importing the raws now into Lightroom, but it has caused me to change how I am working.

FastStone Image Viewer 7.0 is a free image viewer and basic editor that displays .CR3 thumbnails in its internal browser and, depending on the configuration, allows to open/edit the embedded JPEG image or the RAW image...
