Olympus E-PM2 intermittent problem

Hi, my E-PM2 will, when taking a picture after a long sleep, trip the shutter and go to black, then shut down the camera.  Usually, right afterwards it will work properly.

Anybody have anything like this happen to them?  I just used the camera for about three weeks without it happening, then it happened today a couple of times.

So it's intermittent but not very frequent.  Anybody?

My guess is that you may be having a failing shutter mechanism.  If you had the newer type IBIS in the later generation cameras, that can do that also, if it fails, but I don't know if the version in the EPM2 does that when it goes.

My suggestion would be to use continue to use the camera until it consistently starts happening, and then send it in for repair (you may want to call Oly first and find out what the repair would cost; if it's expensive, it might make more sense to consider a new camera, unfortunately).  The EPM2 is a nice camera, I had one for a year, and liked it a lot, hopefully you can get it fixed without it being too expensive.

Thanks.  It's still very rare, but I knew about it when i bought it used.  Good price so I took a chance.

It might be worth cleaning the battery and lens contacts to eliminate them as a cause.  Does it occur with more than one lens?

Re: Olympus E-PM2 intermittent problem

I've been trying things to get the camera to stop doing this, and if I use one of the high speed shutter modes, it doesn't lock up.  Seems like it's an electrical problem of some sort.  Just logically why would it only happen once and then be ok after? And only after sitting around idle for a long time.  Any way, I think that's my workaround.

It might also be an OS bug. Are you using the lastest OS?

Have you checked changing the settings that controls sleep mode and after how much time of inactivity the camera turns itself of?

I usually just turn the camera off when I'm not using it to save battery. The booting time is fast enough for it not to be a problem...

I also have a E-m10 and I have noticed that sometimes it stutters a bit and takes a bit longer to activate after being in sleep mode for a long time. I also just switch the camera off when not using it for more than a few minutes. I trained myself to switch the camera on while I bring it to my eye.

Are you using and external flash? With the E-M10 I have noticed a weird shutter action when I turned the camera on with an external flash. It doesn't happen often enough to for me to notice what actually causes it. Maybe is the RC mode or HHS... In any case maybe something similar happens with the E-PM2? I only use the little flash that came with it and it has never caused a problem...
