I would love to see some side by side comparisons as well. So far I haven't been all that impressed with the difference between the two. From what i have seen the new one is better but it isn't the huge difference that people seem to indicate and the price difference is pretty substantial.

Thanks a lot for those comparison shots, they are much appreciated

I haven't spent too much time analyzing your comparison images, but my first reaction is that the difference between the lenses is very small. Yes I can see some slight differences in the bokeh, but overall it isn't like there is a huge difference.

Do you agree, or have I not studied the images closely enough?

Maybe you studied them too closely. The crops I showed at the end hide the nervous bokeh of the 35L. I did not want to post the whole pictures though.

Fair point Reading further through this thread I realize that you think that the Mark II is much better than the original version. I will have to look more at the pictures when I get home to see if I can follow your conclusion. In any case: You taking the time to post these comparison shots is much appreciated, so thank you

I am not a big believer in direct comparisons even though I do it sometimes. Since I took those comparisons, I have used the 35LII for more than three years and I had the 35L for years as well. Yes, the 35LII is better in all respects.

There are situations when you cannot tell a difference but those are family pictures I cannot post: subject close, like in a restaurant sitting against you, background far enough. On the other hand, if you push it like a subject farther away and not enough physical separation from the background, the 35L starts to get nervous.

Both lenses focused perfectly even om my 5D2, which actually had a great AF.

The sad thing is that when I show compassion shots that do illustrate the difference between the two lenses to people who aren't serious photography enthusiasts I'm told there isn't a difference. No doubt the difference is there but it doesn't seem to even register.
