Guess I'll finally stick with m43
96

Since I left the DSLR world back in 2013, exchanging my Canon 5D MkII and lenses for a Oly E-M5, I've been moving between different systems. I had a E-P5, a Fuji X-E1, a Sony A7II (x2), Fuji X100T (x2), Sony A7RII, Fuji X-T1, X-E2S, X-T2, X-Pro2, Pana GX80 and finally a E-M5II and a X-T20. This was until I picked one E-M1 II. I've since then sold almost everything I still had from Fuji and been returning to m43 where I'm hopping to stay for some time.

My decision was taken not because of image quality, better DR or ISO but something very important, the sensations. I know my images have now a little bit more of noise, maybe a little bit less resolution but the camera and lenses just feel good to hand and use. Be it on the city, seaside or country, I've been felling more and more comfortable with the system. If I'm walking around the city, a small bag with the 17mm + 45mm and I'm done. If I go to shoot landscapes, I carry my small backpack with the 8-18, 12-40 and 35-100 plus filters and tripod and I'm good to go. LE shots are just fun to do now. Bracket shots are also so easy to do even hand held that I don't care about DR.

So, guess I'll stay here for a while.

Re: Guess I'll finally stick with m43

I’m the same. I’ve started with a GF1 back in 2011(2012?) and since then I’ve had multiple bodies. I’ve had a Canon 100D, 7D, Nikon d3300, d90, Panasonic G7, GH4, Olympus E-M5, Samsung NX11, Sony a6300, a6500, Fujifilm X-T1, X-T20, x100s, X-Pro 1, X-E1. I currently have an X100F (which is for sale), GX80 and a Sony RX100 IV. (Now I’ve realised how many I’ve had I’m definitely going to stick) There’s just something about m43, the possibility to pick up older bodies used for cheap, the small and budget friendly lenses which can also be very good. The amount of features which are included in m43 cameras are great too, IBIS, great video, amazing touch screens. I think that’s what makes me keep coming back. I think I’m going to stick too! I am hoping for a g9 sometime within the next year. Awesome photos!

Yikes!  I think the cost alone would have persuaded me to stick with one system. I'm glad you chose m43, because I enjoy your photos in the weekly thread.

Love the shot inside the place with the star burst on top of him and the last shot.

You touched on something key which is just how something feels in hand.  This is why I always say people should try to grab the camera/lens they want in person as a final step in their decision.

Some great images there.  Fantastic work!

I feel much the same TBH.  I also went from a 5Dii to an E-M5 (and in 2013) and likewise have played around with other systems (A7Rii, Fuji XE1, RX100, LX100) but find that micro 4/3 is the perfect compromise in terms of IQ and usability.  There's very little that I can't do because of system limitations; but the cameras and lenses in everyday use always bring a smile to my face - and I have no complaints from the images when they're uploaded to the PC!

Very interesting story. I can understand that the act of doing it and how you feel can be very important, not just the final outcome. You obviously enjoy your photo taking.  Then it's play, not work.

Thanks for the post, and great photos.

It's funny - the forums tend to sneer at people that change systems frequently, but now that I'm considering what to replace my E-M5 with (purchased around the same time you did), I have a different perspective.

The camera industry is in a state of fast, seismic change right now - therefore a "sampling" approach is perfectly rational if you have the finances to do so.  Many of those cameras you listed (Sony A7 series, Fuji X-T series, latest m43 from Oly & Panny) are very intriguing, and the best way to see what works for you is to use them.

Glad you found your "perfect" gear (at least for now).

Cheers,

Jeff

Thanks Jeff. A lot of times I thought to myself over the last years that I should just have stick with my E-M5 instead of go try everything else, spending loads of money in the process. In fact, I must confess I was not hapier with my a7r2 files either, so guess what's more important to me is the fun I have shooting as the results are not limited by none of the gear I've used until now.

I've been on a mildly similar journey  (d750, rx1)  and am staying w/ m4/3 too.

Nice photos!

Good to hear you are happy. I too find m43 (EM1.2) and mix of Oly, Pany (also ZD SHG FT lens) simply fun to use. I can upscale (Eg. EM1.2 with battery grip and SHG 14-35 F2.0) plus as many lenses as I want in a shoulder bag or downscale as much as I want (only EM1.1 without battery grip and a 17mm 1.8 plus Pany 12-32 folding zoom in my pocket).

IQ is mostly more than enough. What more could I ask for? If I won the lotto I would stay with m43 (plus all the Pro Primes hahah) and maybe get some other systems and their lenses for the odd play with shooting cats at home ;).

Nice photos!

I keep lusting over an RX1 (well, RX1Rii).  What were your thoughts on it?  Why didn't you keep it?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Guess I'll finally stick with m43

The rx1 (1st edition) was stellar.  It occasionally gave me qualities of resolution and

"3-dimensionality" that popped like nothing else.

I unloadedd it it because I had too many cameras... a problem I still have (-:

Some wonderful images there Jose!

Similar to you I own and have used lots of different system, and if you really want to talk sensations then you owe it to yourself to give REAL LEICA a try.

I know my images have now a little bit more of noise, maybe a little bit less resolution but the camera and lenses just feel good to hand and use.

As above, try a real Leica/Zeiss/Voig lens in M mount then you will truly understand what feel good really means

My M240 serves as my fun "photographer's camera", whereas my Sony ff mirrorless remains to be my more serious camera when IQ counts.

Your images are excellent and clearly you have eyes for detail, but like you've said it's my belief that you are hindering your photographic progress when bigger and better things can happen.

Imo fun and sensation can only take you this far which is kind of a shame really.

Be it on the city, seaside or country, I've been felling more and more comfortable with the system. If I'm walking around the city, a small bag with the 17mm + 45mm and I'm done.
