Canon SL-2

Out local Best Buy has a Very Small amount of DSLR's in stock, but they do have the 80D & now the SL-2, which I saw & handled briefly yesterday.  I really like this camera & am planning on renting the body sometime in May & "road test" it.  Small, & would love to be able to replace my aging 300D & 30D with this body.  It depends on how well it works for me & finding the funds to buy one.

It is a terrific camera that made me switch back to a DSLR from M4/3. For me. the 9 point AF is quite sufficient and the dual pixel AF is really a gem. The quality lightweight lenses and fixed aperture pancake lenses 24 2.8, 40 2.8 and a little larger 50 1.8 are a real treat to use. The equally lightweight 10-20 4.5-5.6, 18-135 3-5.6 and the 55-250 4-5.6 all STM lenses fast and quiet. Many of the lenses can be picked up refurbished  or used in like new condition for quite a saving. This kit really covers it all and I couldn't be happier. There are many websites that have a buy/sell section that that is frequented by photo enthusiasts with perfect 100% feedback ratings. One such site is fredmiranda.com Check it out.

Re: Canon SL-2

I haven't tried it in person but it seems to get many things right, at a strangely low price. it even solves my one ergonomic gripe, which was the lack of grip on the SL1.

I picked up the SL2 last September and have come to really like this camera. It delivers IQ in spades and, I agree, that all the new STM lenses are outstanding values. I originally bought it as a stop gap measure until a MILC came out that checked enough boxes for me buy one. The SL2 has pushed this decision off quite a ways for me. I picked up the EF-S 18-55mm STM f/4.0-5.6 and the EF-S 10-18mm lenses to go with the EF-S 55-250mm STM and EF 50mm STM and this combination gets me excellent results from an effective range of 16mm-400mm. I have all this after spending a little over $1,000 for the entire package or for about the price of the M5 and kit lens.

I bought my EF-S 55-250mm from a seller at Fred Miranda's site for $125 with no issues at all. Just pick a seller that has a decent history there.

Re: Canon SL-2

My guess is you will really like the SL2.  It is probably the best value DSLR sold today, IMO.  Plus, the high quality, small and lightweight budget STM lenses available from Canon make it an even better value.  This little camera gives you 80-85% of what the 80D gives you for less than half the price.

I agree with everything everyone has said.  It is a wonderful small camera that is capable of producing really outstanding photos.  I have been surprised at how much I have enjoyed mine.

Thanks to all who commented on this camera.  I have All of the lenses I need right now, & I don't want or need any ef-s lenses.  If I could buy 1 more lens, it would either be 1 of 3 Canon lenses - 24mm 2.8IS, 28mm 2.8IS or possibly the 35mm f2.0IS. The reason I don't want any ef-s lenses,  I would like to go full-frame some day.

Not wanting to ruin your day, but I didn´t find this tactics particularly good.

You either get lenses you might not feel being THAT GOOD for your crop camera (not as sharp, not as usable focal lenghts) Or vice versa - after you switch for FF, the old lenses will feel very different, and you might stop liking many of these.

The EF-S lenses are cheap, and VERY good value. You can´t come to great loss when you buy them now, and resell them later. But you will have "proper" lens setup and best quality for your setup now. Just a recommendation. Happened to me...

If FF is where you want to end up then a used 6D is probably within reach and a better choice.  It probably doesn't make sense to throw money at an SL2.  Especially it you never plan to take advantage of the excellent EF-S lenses that are available for it.

I pretty much agree with this if you're not going to buy any EF-S lenses. You can get a refurbished 6D at a very reasonable price for your EF lenses. If you don't already own the EF 40mm pancake, I recommend it for a small, general purpose lens on a FF camera.........very compact and very good IQ.

Re: Canon SL-2

+2  I would definitely look for a used 6D. It is an amazing camera, and you will be very happy the minute you get into full frame!!!! Don't waste any more time with a crop sensor.
