Bargain basement rebel

Apparently there is a Rebel to be announced which will slot below the 1400D/T7 called the T100 according to Canon Rumors.

If true, I’m curious to see how barebones it actually is. But you know, honestly, Canon could just as easily make the T6 their bargain basement model. Because my thinking is whatever new low priced Rebel they introduce will be similarly spec’d.

It doesn't make any sense to me.  It seems like if anyone wanted a camera that was so basic, they'd just use their smartphone.  Plus, there are other basic cameras, or bridge cameras available.  It seems like a strange strategy.

The T7 will then go out of production when they make the new one

T6 is long discontinued

But a new model sells more than a old one that consumers see as outdated because it is old

A DSLR, basic or otherwise, has a much larger sensor, resulting in better image quality.

T6 is not discontinued. It’s still their starter camera. You might be thinking of the T6i.

Cheap sells. This hour, on AmazonUSA, the two best selling DSLRs are priced under $400.

Agreed.  The larger sensor will result in better images thatn a phone.  I'm just not sure that someone going for super basic is that interested in dyhamic rang", low noise, printing, developing RAW images.  I think they want decent pictures of their children's birthdays or their pets and would probably be more likly to use their smartphone.  But, maybe for the mre serious shooter to have as a second or third camera.  This makes sense to me. Just  curious about the marketing strategy.

Any camera Canon releases with the DPAF 24mp APS-C sensor will be a winner, IMO.

For some money is an issue and I know it few that availability of a lower cost dslr would really help them get started with serious photography.  As they build their skills they will eventually be able to justify larger photography expenditures.  I think it is a smart move to lower the barrier to entry.

I agree.  I'm glad that there are cameras out there for everyone.  I just notice that so many people are using smartphones and Iphones for pictures and was wondering if Canon is considering this fact when planning on another low end camra.  Yes, a larger sensor camera will deliver better photos, but I'm not sure if the general population will go fo it.  As I understand, the sales of DSLR's are falling in favor of mirrorless and phones, so time will tell.

I believe this rumor. Somewhere in Canon there are pallets with boxes of their 18 MP sensors and DIGIC 4 processors. Must be sold. Ironically this crap is always their bestselling DSLR. Most of Canon's DSLRs I see in the wild are 1000D-1300D (T series). 10 years ago these parts were used in the flagship cameras. And yes, they take better pictures than the latest iPhones, it is a fact, not an opinion
