Canon 16-35 2.8 vs Sony 16-35 2.8

Just got the A7riii and leaving tomorrow on my first trip with it. Going to Arizona and seeing horseshoe bend and also do some canyons.

My local camera shop last month I put in an order to rent the Sony Gmaster 16-35 2.8 for this trip. I get a call today at 5pm that the gmaster they had to send in for repair but they can lend me a canon 16-35 2.8 lens with sigma adapter..

I never used canon lenses with adapter, always used Sony lenses, they are offering me a nice discount for taking the Canon lens. Suppose to pick up tomorrow but is it worth brining the Canon 16-35 2.8 with sigma adapter?

What will I be missing that the gmaster has? Anything to look out for?

If you are saying about Canon 16-35mm F2.8 III, I have both for a while. You will be missing the following three parts:

1. You will get a heavier and longer lens

The 16-35GM is about 230g lighter and 2-3cm shorter (see pic below).

2. AF performance and weather sealing

No AF-A or DMF with Canon lens on MC-11.

MC-11 doesn't have the rubber ring

3. IQ may decrease

In real life photography, difference in IQ is negligible. However, when shooting ISO12333 chart, 16-35GM is better than 16-35 III with MC-11 adapter (Maybe the adapter will downgrade the IQ, I'm not sure). Following are part of my test shoots:

35mm@F2.8 Center

35mm@F2.8 Corner

16mm@F2.8 Center

16mm@F2.8 Corner

Re: Canon 16-35 2.8 vs Sony 16-35 2.8

I shot the Canon 16-35mm f2.8 III for some time (on A7RII and 5DSR) and now shoot the GM 16-35mm f2.8. The optical performance is nearly identical, but the Sony seems sharper at 35mm f2.8, off-center. The size and weight of the GM lens makes it much more preferable, IMHO, not to mention the additional focus modes.

Note if you are talking about a previous version of the Canon lens, the GM would be far superior.

Well if its only a loaner I'm sure you can make it work but make sure its the version III which you don't state but the other two replies assume. There is also the older version II and they might be actually offering you that one that does not have IQ that approaches the III or the GM.

Maybe you want to ask them if they have a FE 12-24 G as a loaner instead unless you really think you need the f/2.8. The 12-24 is supposed to be very good and its a smaller than the GM and much smaller than an adapted Canon 16-35mm f/2.8L III.

Thanks everyone, amazing all the response I got so fast. Yes I will need to make sure it’s iii version. I will ask if they have the 12-24, I also been looking at that lens. Leaving to the camera store soon

Re: Canon 16-35 2.8 vs Sony 16-35 2.8

So the Canon lens they had was the second version.

So my only option was to go with that canon or the Sony 16-35 f4 with the Batis 18mm 2.8 They offered me half off the rental so the total came to $70 bucks for 1 week rental.

Not happy about brining another lens but think this was a better option then the canon with adapter. The Batis is so light and the f4 Zeiss is tiny as well.

Re: Canon 16-35 2.8 vs Sony 16-35 2.8

I owned the Sony 16-35 f4 before upgrading to the Sony 2.8 and it will work just fine for your proposed locations unless you need the 2.8 on the zoom. Shooting f/8 to f/11 I think you will have difficulty in seeing a difference. They sunstar differently but the added OIS the lighter weight and smaller filters are all a plus in my mind. I quite often wish I still had kept the f4 version of the Sony lens .  I did own the Canon 16-35 f/4 and why it was a great lens I didn't personally see an advantage over the Sony.  I did keep my Canon 24-70 f2.8 II and use it with my MC-11.

Canon 16-35 f4 is said to be much better than f2. 8 II. I have it , light and great IQ

Re: Canon 16-35 2.8 vs Sony 16-35 2.8

My local camera store is very limited on what they have. I did not even think about the f4 canon. At first they did not have any Sony 16-35. I was going to go with the 24-70 2.8g and the 18mm Batis but then the sale guy found a used sony 16-35 f4 that someone wanted to buy but never came to buy, So they lent me that lens.

I am really liking the 18mm Batis, so light..

Re: Canon 16-35 2.8 vs Sony 16-35 2.8

I have the Sony A7rii and use the Metabones V adapter with the Canon 16-35 F4 and get excellent results for landscape. I do not have personal experience with the Canon 16-35 F2.8 but it is my understanding the the F4 version IQ is better.  Certainly I get great results with my F4.  Hope that helps.

Re: Canon 16-35 2.8 vs Sony 16-35 2.8

If you can still get FE 16-35 GM, this will be the best choice.

I currently adapted EF 16-35L/4.0 IS but will replace it with FE 16-35 GM.  Adapted lenses always have some potential issues, at least not best in AF performance.

I've had the Batis 18 for a while now and its a great lens. If 18mm fits what you want to shoot its IQ is as good or better than the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM. I own both and use the 18mm Batis and 25mm Batis or the 16-35 GM for its flexibility. The Sony f/4 16-35 is also very good if you don't need f/2.8. So with these I think your covered for your trip.
