Read Error or Card Error? Any PERMANENT fix?

Anyone know why this occurs and any permanent fix? I recently picked up a X-T10 and am using a Sandisk Extreme Pro 32GB card and have had instances where one of the 2 errors would occur. I've used to encounter the Card Error on the X100T as well.

Out of all camera brands I've used, I've never encountered this before until using Fuji and it is quite frustrating and irritating having to format the card each and every time this problem occurs.

P.S., I've formatted the card as many times that may be necessary yet to no avail. Fuji's answer on "fixing" the issue is problematic.

Maybe you should try a different SD card...

I'll have to say no.

Here's why:

1) I have never encountered this problem before with other camera brands (Canon, Pentax, Leica, Olympus, Panasonic) using the Sandisk Extreme Pro.

2) These cards run at least $20+ each and are not your everyday, cheapo, average-joe SD card you pick for a few bucks at the local store.

3) I own 5 of these cards. There is no way these cards are problematic in any way especially when they're top-notch cards Sandisk produces.

Re: Read Error or Card Error? Any PERMANENT fix?

Fuji knows about it.

I know about it. My X-T20 won't read any SD card, and I have tried many. The flash doesn't work either. I sent it in today, along with copy of my invoice, to Fuji repair in Edison, N.J. after speaking with them on the phone.

IF you look on Fuji website, I forget where, they discuss the issue...

Re: Read Error or Card Error? Any PERMANENT fix?

Last week, I sent my X-T20 to be repaired for this very reason.  I got the error but I always carry a spare SD card, but that got the same error.  When I called FujiFilm support, they asked me to put the card into another camera and try it.  Of course, it worked so they had me send the camera to their facility in Edison NJ.
Thankfully, the warranty expires in March, so I'm covered.
I'm disappointed to see this problem persist on other Fujifilm camera.  It makes me think there is a hardware issue.
I like so many things about the camera but I have to admit that it feels a bit 'buggy' and it seems like every so often I am working around some issue.

Great. Not only is it disappointing to learn this affects other fuji cameras as well but the fact that I have no warranty having purchased the x-t10 off ebay... I am quite surprised this affects the x-t20 as well, fuji needs to step it up with preventing these issues from happening before releasing new gear...

This will really suck especially when I go on a long trip...

Because this is bad publicity for them, hopefully, Fujifilm will make good on this issue.  If not, legal action may be the only remedy.
Even with some flaws, I have been enjoying my X-T20, my first Fujifilm purchase, and was looking forward to exploring more Fujifilm products.  But now, I will wait and see.

It happened to me before I sent it in. I was up shooing at a friend's ranch. But luckily, I had a spare camera.

Yes, I always eject the card properly before removing from sd slot. However, if you intend on saying the error may occur due to inconsistencies on mac and fuji compatibilities, then Fuji needs to get their act together.

Re: Read Error or Card Error? Any PERMANENT fix?

To test my hypothesis that the mac could write something on the card test the following 1- on the Mac a full format not a quick and standard one

2- try a full format (a few min) on a PC

See if that solves the issue

3- Reformat in the camera once it has been accepted

Report

Good luck

I only use a PC, not a mac.  Regardless, it has nothing to do with the issue.
When I bought the camera X-T20 last March, I also purchased 2  SD cards (both 128gb) and both were formatted in the camera.  After 10 months, the reader gave an error on a card so I inserted the other card.  Still a read error so a bought a new card.  Still a read error.

Then I tested all 3 cards in my old Olympus.  All three worked just fine.

There are several people having the same exact error on different models of Fujifilm cameras.
It is probably a hardware problem.  But what it definitely is not is a computer or user problem.

I have replied to this issue before n here is e solution :

Change e naming of ur files. DO NOT USE E DEFAULT NAMING. Used to have a few read error every shoot. After changing e naming, have never had an issue.

I have a rational for doing this but shall not say it cos some ppl in e forum will start saying it cannot be blah blah cos fuji is so good...so if e problem bugs u...try it. If ur instinct says live w e problem than try this weird solution...then live w it;)

If it works good for u as it is good for me...it not u r still back to the same problem...nothing worst.

With the same exact card?

Yea, but you might have a bad one. And $20 is not all that expensive. It might be worth it to have another anyhow.

3) I own 5 of these cards. There is no way these cards are problematic in any way especially when they're top-notch cards Sandisk produces.

So all five cards do this?

How do you format? Do you do any operations to and from the card using your card reader?

Maybe. That three people here have mentioned and issue doesn't mean the OP hasn't tested out all possibilities. So far, I don't see anything to tell me it's NOT the card itself for the OP.

Re: Read Error or Card Error? Any PERMANENT fix?

The purpose of my comments is to eliminate all possible causes apart a hardware problem

This will be a checked list fo Fuji repair without any contestation.

I am more fortunate I never had such problems with any of my Fuji X bodies, XP1 (died in a tempest, RIP) XT1 replaced by XT2 and my spare XT10

With some cards althgough stated compatible by Fuji I have sometimes a freeze that needs switching off/on (Lexar)

Re: Read Error or Card Error? Any PERMANENT fix?

I had a problem with my xpro 1 and two sandisk extreme pro 32gig cards where it said there was a read error in the camera but I was able to download my images.

Re: Read Error or Card Error? Any PERMANENT fix?

I don’t see how hard it is to explain or understand the issue. As I mention before, no read errors whatsoever when using the cards with other camera brands. I post process on a MacBook Pro which has a SD card slot built into it. After I am done transferring the pictures I always right click the card icon and click eject. After the icon disappears I then proceed to remove the card. I’ve done this process for ever since I started doing Photography and shooting Raw. As I repeat over again and again, I have never encountered this problem ever until I used Fuji. This problem occurred twice, over the summer 2017 with a x100t (which I had sold 6 months ago) and now the x-t10, it’s been a good 6 months that I have not used a Fuji and only recently picked up the x-t10 and forgot about the error that may potentially affect my next Fuji purchase.

my apologies for the snarky responses, I am annoyed at the negative frequent occasions that are getting in my way of shooting pictures.

We're just trying to eliminate all variables.

does this clear up the confusion as others have said to experience similar issues?

It doesn't matter if others have had similar issues, we care about your situation. There's nothing to say that your situation is the same...yet.

So we have this:

1) You're using the card reader on your mac (I do the same). Generally, I've not had issues with card readers and I've had several macbook pros. But it's possible.

2) It's till not clear if the specific card(s) has/have been used on other cameras or if you're generically referring to the same brand/model of card when you use "cards" above. If these same cards are operating well with other cameras, how long ago?

There are two variables that haven't been cleared up for me - 1) card reader issues, 2) cards can and do go bad.

You will have to try another memory card in that camera to eliminate 2) above. You can easily test 1) above by using another card reader somewhere.

It's also unclear to me how you're formatting the cards. It should always be done in camera. I've had issues in the past with multiple camera brands when formatting on my computer - Olympus, Canon, Nikon. (Sorry if you said that alread, I couldn't find it.)

If you haven't done the two above, you haven't eliminated all the variables. I'm not saying that it's not the camera, I'm just saying that it might be worth it to avoid an unnecessary trip to the repair center.
