Redo of 24-105 F4, 85 1.8 comparison

Obviously these are not "scientific", but I did my best to match everything: Focus was on the end of the rainspout next to the window in the middle, 5sec timer, steadyshot off on both.

For whatever reason, although I used med-spot over exactly the same position, the 85 1.8 did not seem to nail the focus on the rainspout. I used manual focus to make the rainspout as sharp as I could get with red pixels right next to it. I did the same on the wires on the roof, but still I'm not confident that the focus is absolutely the same. We'll have to wait for one of the "lab" reviews I'm afraid.

Anyway, here's what I came up with, all RAW no processing, converted in jpeg in LR CC.

Alternating between 24-105 and 85 1.8 from F4 to F8

Cheers

...Quite honestly, I prefer the SEL24105G photos and would sell the 85, unless cumbersomeness is a concern - You don't even need to zoom in!

(The light conditions changed and there is a flare with some 85 photos, but the SEL24105G has a special pop/3D dimension the prime misses...)

All the best,
Pedro

You can always shoot the 85mm from f1.8 or higher, but you can't shoot less than f4 on the 24-105mm.

If you like subject isolation, shooting in lowlight, smaller/lighter lenses, and extra money in your pocket, I know which lens I'd be keeping.

Yes, I'm certainly keeping the 85 1.8 for portrait work although I also have the 100 stf, but it's mostly for good light.

As an all-round, walkaround, travel lens though, the 24-105 F4 is going to be the new standard IMHO.

Yeah I have the 100mm STF as well.

I thought about getting the 85mm too, but how often do I shoot portraits in low light???

So on that rare occasion, I'll make do with my Voigtlander FE 40mm f1.2

So what's your conclusion?  I view at low-res office monitor and seem don't see much difference.  This zoom seems excellent.

Absolutely the best zoom I've ever had!

Can't wait for the weather to improve so I can get out and use it more!

Of course - That's the reason why I have both lenses, although my 85mm is a the Batis 1.8/85...

I would certainly buy another 85mm/F1.8 and that's what I meant with the smile at the end of the text...
