Olympus PEN-EP5 Broken.

some things just die...

it's the way it is.. articles and books and entire industries have been built about it.

the one thing I can guarantee is that there is zero correlation between what happened and any future purchase you will make.. i.e. Your past is not your future

i have two examples .. a cool pix camera that failed after 13 months, with less than 200 actuations.. Nikon wanted huge money to fix what was not a great camera, so I bailed..and never bought another Nikon...

a toshiba tv that died 2 days after the warranty expired.. I asked if there was any reason why I should buy another toshiba and was repeatedly told the warranty was expired..lol, not an answer to my question..

so, while both canon and Olympus have been flawless for me over 30 years, I have no expectations that I will be immune from an infant mortality device, or an early failure..it simply just happens.

the reality is that it's a fair price for a service to your ep5....manufacturers largely quote same fixed price regardless of perceived problem and note it's cheaper than a used ep5 unless you get lucky.. and you will be left with a far better camera than epl8 due to the better controls and ergonomics..

I'm really undecided now, but down to two options. I can't afford the PEN-F.

I could spend $350 or more repairing the EP-5 by the time I pay for two lots of postage. Or I could buy the EM-10 mkii new for $600. Either way, I get to keep my lenses.

If I repair, I get the camera back and it may break again. The dial may go as lots of others have happen. What do you think the success rate of the repair will be?

If I get the EM10, I get a marginally better camera and I could possibly sell the broken EP-5 body. I wonder what I would get for selling the body for spare parts? Surely the screen etc must be worth something in excellent condition?

Thanks

Well the cameras are very different in style and use. But I feel if you were happy with the E-P5 you should stick with it. However, why pay $350 to repair when you can buy a new E-P5 with a 2 year Australian warranty for $450 Australian? On e-bay right now.

but if you can really get a new E-P5 (with warranty) for only a $100AUD more from a reputable seller, than it's really a no brainer which of the options you should take. No way I would get it repaired in that circumstance.

And hurry. The listing said seven sold one remaining.

Thanks everyone for your help. Especially Traveler_101, who put me onto the E-P5 body for 450 from ebay. I( hadn't found it previously. Best thing was, there was a 20% voucher valid until 28th Jan so I actually got it for $360!

Now I am sorted, new EP5 in a few days time! Will then investigate selling the old body in broken condition.

I kept coming back to the E-M10 mkii not providing enough new features over the EP-5. The PEN-F looks great and I assume a variant of it will be what I buy next, hopefully not for quite a few years to come!

Thanks again.

Whatever you do, don’t buy the Mark III, it has been dumbed down.

getting the E-M10 MKIII. Yes, it's simplified but that is NOT necessarily a bad thing. Look at what the OP wrote. Unless I'm wrong, the OP seems to be the type of photographer that the MKIII menu system is targeted at. In general, a casual photographer will do just fine with the MKIII way of doing things.

Dozens of menu functions were removed from the Mark III, how do we know that the OP doesn't use one of the missing functions?

Better to save money and get the Mark II which has the menu he's familiar with.

Agreed, the menu structure was a massive learning curve. It seems a backward move to strip that flexibilty from what is essentially an enthusiast grade bit of gear. I dont like the EPL series, because I hope to one day be able to push my abilities to meet the cameras.

One of the reasons it is attractive to remain with the Ep5 is that I have spent the last few years learning how to use it!

Cheers

I helped with my own learning curve by making a page about the E-P5 menus that may help others http://homepages.ihug.com.au/~parsog/olyepl1/56-ep5-custom-menus.html

Re: Olympus PEN-EP5 Broken.

Considering your investment in gear and lenses, I can understand if you want to stay with Micro Four Thirds.

If you want a PL5 back, why don't you look at the 2nd hand market?

Just a quick check in my country turns up a PL5 body for about  230 Australian dollars equivalent - asking price.

That is considerably lower than the original price.

Often, second hand camera's have been very infrequently used because photography wasn't a big hobby after all.

He has already bought a greatly discounted E-P5, so no worries as it will have 2 years warranty. See https://www.dpreview.com/forums/post/60680354

Oz$ as in this deal I guess, Ryda in the past always bought from Oly Australia so genuine 2 yr warranty applies. Note the 20% discount to take the price down from Oz$448.85 to (my calc) Oz$359.08 - that's the best deal ever seen here in Oz. And if someone did an overseas trip within 60 days they could get the tax returned on exit so take it down further to Oz$326.44 and that equals about US$263.11 today. A fabulously low price for such a great camera.
